I just did that and the APIM was recognized as sync 3 but I have a ton of error codes and communication issues. Is this a programming issue or is something seriously wrong?
Well, that’s a good start. You’ll likely need to manually rebuild the configuration for the APIM, and change a few things on some of the other modules as well.
Pull up the Cyanlabs as-built database, and figure out the right as-built for your current set up by going line-by-line.
I don’t understand any of that. I don’t know what any of those settings do so I can’t change them
That’s ok, we can help. Did you add the GPS antenna for the APIM? Without GPS the ABS and APIM have issues, along with a few others. Get that fixed if it isn’t.
Both the APIM and HVAC show Uxxxx DTC’s, which are module misconfigurations. I would say the first thing to do is load APIM and HVAC asbuilt from a 2018 Explorer XLT vehicle, or equivalent to the features you have installed at this point, and see if you get closer. One thing to remember is a 2018 Explorer is CGEA 1.3 and in this case North America (NA). Some of the settings will rely on this being correct.
You can decipher most of the codes here: OBD-Codes OBD-II Trouble Codes - DTC Codes Car Repair
I plugged in a GPS antenna into the APIM but it’s an aftermarket antenna, not anything that was already a part of the vehicle. The seller told me that the harness with the factory GPS antenna was only needed for a sync 2 upgrade.
The HVAC came from a 2018 XLT so I don’t know what I’m supposed to do there, I thought it would work.
Thanks for stepping in to help. I’m extremely confused. I will try to find the APIM AB for a 2018 XLT
OK, looking thru the APIM codes points to an issue with the HS-CAN buss. Can you show all of the codes that FORScan is listing on that page…
Also, a complete listing of all the modules in the vehicle by network. This is in the top icon, listed as modules by network or network.
Like this…
@bill32399 Does this look like a GWM issue?
Sorry I’m borrowing a laptop for this so I’m not signed into anything and I have to take pics of the screen
That works.
Looks like the APIM is not seeing the other modules, all other modules except the HVAC have good communications and are not complaining about the APIM. This tells me that the APIM still does not see the rest of the vehicle for the most part. The BCM errors are about lights. The HVAC ‘B’ codes are all about the heated seats, etc.
Make sure your connections are like the spreadsheet attached…

Did I get a bad wiring harness or something? How can I fix this.
I have the VIN from the 2018 XLT that the HVAC came from but I can’t find the as built on the motorcraftservice website. It just says PCM and lists a bunch of numbers but I don’t see anything for APIM. I also don’t know how to load the files from that website into forscan even if I did find the APIM. It’s just one file for the entire vehicles AB
PM me the VIn’s for the HVAC and APIM donors if you have them.
Also the asbuilts for both of those modules if you have them.
Since you are using the asbuilt from another vehicle you probably can’t use the .ab file directly on your vehicle in FORScan. However, you can use the individual .ABT files.
You could try this asbuilt for the APIM…2018 Explorer XLT.

In the asbuilt menu for the APIM, just select ‘Load All’
Load the file…
Write the file. Force overwrite if asked.
Wait for the module to reboot fully.
Perform a master reset if possible or reset the module using FORScan in the Tools menu.
Clear all DTC’s with FORScan.
Rescan for DTC’s and see how it went…
I sent you the VIN for the HVAC. I have no idea what the APIM is programmed to, I ordered it on Ebay as “new” but they asked for my year and model so I have a feeling they programmed something on it beforehand. Does that change anything?
And as far as a master reset, how does one do that? And will it erase all the updates that were on it? It was advertised to have the latest SYNC and maps already installed. Thanks again for all the help, seriously
PM me the VIN for your PIU…
Can you access the HVAC module? You need to program the VIN.
Yes I can get into the as built. Which VIN do I put where?
and also, the XLT that the HVAC was from also had the same 8" bezel with the auto climate control buttons that I have installed for this upgrade. Not sure if that helps, maybe the AB from that VIN would work for the APIM too?
HVAC module VIN for your vehicle:
733 02-01 3146 4D35 4B81

733 02-03 4742 3638 366C
733 02-04 3834 AC
Or you can just use this file using the instructions I outlined above.

I’ll check on you later…
We’re making some progress. I tried to use the new AB for both modules but nothing was fixed so I restored them both back to what they were. Then I went into DTC and tried to delete the error code for one of my lights but it deleted all of them. So then I scanned it again and the APIM error codes were gone. I’m still having problems with the climate control though, I can press the manual buttons and they seem to do something but there’s no data on the climate screen and none of the buttons on the screen do anything. There are still error codes on the HVAC module. I’m adding a photo of those errors and also the climate settings in the easy menu, maybe I don’t have something enabled correctly. Thanks!
Also, does anyone know if the controls on the right side of the steering wheel are supposed to work with sync 3? My arrow buttons don’t seem to be doing anything right now @bill32399
Sorry late to the chat here. Had to make sure the calculations were correct for the next launch.
Looks like you have figured out most of the DTC’s. Don’t worry about them as they are all easily fixed with AB changes. Looks like you had several helpers leading you in the right direction.
Yes, the right side will work but it could need changes to the SCCM to tell it how to act for which pack it has depending on what you want it to do.
I got the APIM errors to go away just by deleting them. I’m still trying to figure out the HVAc. It’s 90 degrees here and currently I have no climate control
Yes turn on the Climate overlay. The error you show is because you don’t have rear controls hooked up from the back of the center console. You would need to turn that off and that code would go away.
These errors you have are just there because the previous vehicle had these option and you don’t.
Change climate control type to manual also. No PIU came with Automatic. You can use it and it does work but you will always get a DTC saying the one of the Blend door actuators is not working. Thats because you don’t have one. If your OK with that than leave it too automatic. Or wire it in to the canbus if you want.
