Sync 3.4.19200 update to 3.4.23188. Screen is blackout

Hello,
I have updated the Sync from 3.4.19200 to latest 3.4.23188 in my Ford Explorer 2014. The installation took less than a minute and asked me to restart the vehicle. After restart, the screen is blackout.
Is there any way to fix the issue?

Based on this, the APIM could be a MY20 replacement unit. If so, you can’t reformat, which you did, thus killing it.

Remove the unit from the car and check for the stickers to confirm if it’s MY20 or not.

Whoever did your Sync 2 to Sync 3 upgrade used a MY20 unit. You have bricked your unit since you didn’t research or follow any of the instructions online before updating. You’ll now need a new APIM module to replace your bricked module.

So you don’t know if the APIM is a MY20 replacement or an earlier unit?

If not, just in case the APIM is not a MY20 unit before you do anything else you could try the upload again.

Prior to that you could try a soft reset by starting the engine and holding the power/volume and seek forward >> buttons down at the same time for 10 seconds or so to see if it reboots before trying a new upload as this sometimes fixes a black screen.

You said that the update took less than a minute in the car and you were told to remove the stick and restart the car which obviously isn’t right and normally you ignore that first message and allow the system to reboot and continue with the update which should take 20 or 30 minutes and probably more with Nav.

Not saying it will work and your APIM might be bricked but before doing anything else try uploading again in the car to see if it picks up the update and if you get an early message to remove the USB stick from the drive leave it there til it hopefully completes the update.

You have nothing to lose and normally the update with maps is completed in 30 to 60 minutes and you usually end up with a green screen and a final message to remove the stick from the drive. It is then wise to do a sync master reset.

Please keep us posted.

Rebooted in to reformat tool, reformat tool not compatible with the my20 screen or apim therefore bricked.

This is the picture. It says 2019 if this is the date we are referring to.

A silly question though… how to find out if it is My20?

If you ask me, that looks like a counterfeit unit.
The sticker is “odd looking”, it’s been “made” in CHINA and the model number has a typo.

image

That 6 in the middle should be a G: 14G371 instead of 146371.

So, I would not trust that unit, not one bit.

Based on the number it should not be MY20, but again, I do not trust that sticker or APIM.

Thank you for the response.
Shall I consider that this is already bricked and get a new APIM?
If so, could you please guide me from where to get the right APIM? Is My20 better or not? And how to identify if the APIM is My20 or not?
I am in the United Arab Emirates.
Thanks

I would consider your current APIM dead. Based on the sticker it does not seem an original one, so who knows what’s going on with it.

I can’t guide you on buying a new one, really. But general recommendations apply:

  • source them from a respectable shop on ebay or amazon (forget about those cheap sites)
  • do not get a MY20 unit, since you can’t format them
  • get a K or J series as long as they are not MY20. You can check if an APIM model is MY20 or not in our hardware db → SYNC 3 APIM Hardware Database - CyanLabs

I replaced my china APIM as I had black screen issues, I just replaced my APIM with a LC3T-14G370-BCH and my ACM with KL3T-18D832-FJ everything works great except my station buttons 1 thru 6 don’t work I can tune a station and save it to a button but when I push the button the station does not change, any idea’s?
Thanks

i think your post is fine, as you said you replaced your dodgy china unit with a specific different model and it works well, i get keeping things on topic but i think in this instance it’s fine

Regardless though, if you want help with your issue i would suggest making a new topic and post your asbuilt config

infact i would post the asbuilt of a few modules
fcim, apim and acm

Thank you very much for the info and link

J series built in 2019 with 2 USB ports and built in China? That is a scam APIM.

The dual USB ports were the original APIM’s built in and around 2016 & 2017 and were H series.
