Sync 3 update failing Invalid or Unsigned File

I have a 2016 Ford Edge Titanium. The Sync system is currently on
Software version: 1.0
Build 15139
NSE: 1.21
ID:F0B60C60-005E
GraceNote: 1.1.1.615 (NA-0010)
Navigation Maps version: NA 1 14.

I am unable to get the car to update and all methods fail with the same error. The car will show “software updating,” so the USB drive is being recognized, but after 3-4 minutes the update will fail with the message “Invalid or Unsigned File…installation package may be corrupted, the package signature may have failed or the signature may have been revoked.” I have tried using the USB files from Ford, a direct 1.0>3.4 update using Cyanlabs Syn3 Updated v 2.13.0.0, and a 2.2 Upgrade intermediary upgrade. All of them fail with the same error.

There seem to be a number of oddities with the car.

  1. I have no Automatic update menu under Settings>General. I have About and License info, but no updates menu. Its just not there. I have tried several Sync Master Resets, but they have not helped.
  2. I’m not able to access the IVSU menu. Holding down “seek forward” and “CD eject” for 10+seconds doesn’t do anything.
  3. I’m not able to use the Interrogator USB either. It fails with the same Invalid signature error
  4. When I download the USB updates from Ford, they seem to show that Ford thinks the car is a non-nav unit even though the car clearly has Nav available. Below is the autoinstall.lst that Ford is providing for my VIN.

; SYNC3 Consumer Assembly Upgrade - Release 3.0.25 - Only for NonNav/NonEU assemblies.

Is there anything else I can try/check or is there something wrong/different with the unit that is preventing it from upgrading.
Thanks in advance.

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 1.0.15139

New SYNC Version: 3.0.23219

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
Invalid or Unsigned File…installation package may be corrupted, the package signature may have failed or the signature may have been revoked

Update Method: Official Ford

If the car has NAV (icon on the home screen without having a phone plugged in) and Ford tells you its not NAV then the APIM was swapped out at some time.
Can you post your factory AsBuilt file? That will show if the vehicle had NAV from the factory.

Google told me I could get this information from https://www.motorcraftservice.com/AsBuilt/. Attached is what I received for my VIN. I don’t have Forscan, so I’m not sure how to interpret the file. Let me know if I need to follow a different procedure to get this information or if Google sent me down the right path.

Thanks

7D0-01-02 has a value of x0xx xxxx xx which means this did not have factory NAV

Hmm. The car was used when it was purchased, so it must have been replaced prior to purchase. Is there any chance of getting it updated? What would be the next thing to try?

So this is what you screen looks like without a phone connected?
The NAV icon can be either an arrow or 4 point star.
Sync 3.0 Nav
The problem here is that this APIM could be a China NAV knockoff where they force fit the maps into an APIM that doesn’t have the storage for it.
Your only choice may be to buy a newer APIM from a yard (for a 2016 I usually don’t go higher than a J series) or get one from a reputable source like naviupgrade.

I can confirm that I have the NAV icon with the 4-point star as shown and I can navigate without have a phone connected. The system is the Sony system with sub/amplifier if that makes any difference for future discussions.

Before I look into a replacement APIM, I have one other questions. The reason I started looking into updating the software was because my Wife’s phone (iPhone 13 Pro Max) was was frequently loosing the Bluetooth connection. My Android phone would also occasionally drop the connection, but not as frequently. My hope was that the updated software may have resolved that issue. From what I can fined, BT connectivity is a common issue with the older SYNC systems; however, I’m unclear if the issue was resolved with later software updates. What are the chances that a new APIM with updated software resolves the BT connectivity issues? If it is unlikely to resolve the issue, I would probably pursue an aftermarket head unit.

Similarly, I think my wife may benefit from having an Apple CarPlay. I believe the Sync 3 system can support this with later software versions and an updated USB hub. Is that correct? Would the J-series APIM support Carplay, or should I again consider moving to an aftermarket head unit?

Any insight/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Support for Car Play comes down to two items:

  1. The USB media hub installed, on the 2016 Edge you need to replace the factory one with part number HC3Z-19A387-F for Car Plat to work.
  2. The build of Sync3 installed, you need to be ~2.2.x which most J series should have and those can be brought up to 3.0.23219, a J is also usually a safe candidate to bring to 3.4.x using the updater.
You’ll want to run the interrogator against the “new” APIM before taking it to 3.4.x just to make sure that the unit isn’t a MY2020 (eg when a dealer gets a replacement APIM its not unusual for it to have a J part number like JR3T-14G371-BJG) A newer build should also fix your Bluetooth issues.

Thanks again. Is there an easy way to tell the series of the APIM? Is it just the “J” in the JR3T section of the part number?

Are there any other places you would recommend obtaining the APIM from? Looks like Naviupgrade is backordered for NAV capable APIMs.

Its the start of the part number JR3T-14Gxxx-xx
APIMs are agnostic since you load in the Asbuilt/config for the specific vehicle.
As an example, a NAV APIM from a Fusion would work for you JS7T-14G370-BCH

The APIM in your vehicle was likely replaced with one for NAV, or someone put maps on the original unit. The original unit from the factory is an GB5T-14G371-BFC, a NON-NAV unit. This would have about 8GB of memory and would not support NAV.

Original Equipment is listed as:
7D0
F110>DSGB5T-14G371-AF
F111>GB5T-14G380-AC
F113>GB5T-14G371-BFC (unit model number)
F124>GB5T-14G375-BA
F141>WV1C00NT
F188>GB5T-14G374-AF
F1D1>68C90BE4E216 (unit serial number)

You can look at the unit information screen in Sync and see if this matches.

Run the Interrogator Tool and post the results.

Thanks F150Chief. I think warlock12118 came to the same conclusion. It appears the unit was probably replaced at some point by the prior owner. The current unit does have navigation, but I haven’t taken apart the dash to determine the current APIM model number. The only identifying information listed in “About Sync” is in my first post.

I’m not able to get the Interrogator to run. When I try to run it I get the same “Invalid or Unsigned File…installation package may be corrupted, the package signature may have failed or the signature may have been revoked” error message. I’m also unable to access the IVSU menu. I tried both holding down “seek forward” and “CD eject” as well as “seek forward” on both the steering wheel and head unit. Neither combination seemed to work.

I have concluded that the easiest path forward is to replace the APIM module. I tried reaching out NaviUpgrades to ask a few questions before ordering, but hadn’t gotten any responses. I’m now looking at some other retailers to see if I can get a response.

Do you know if the retailer would need any information from the installed APIM outside of the VIN? I’m wondering if their will be any issue since the current as-built from Ford likely doesn’t match what is in the current APIM. I might see if I can read the current APIM with Forscan. I have a Tactrix open-port ODB adapter that I use on my Evo laying around. I’m not sure if it will work with Forscan, but I thought I might try before ordering another adapter.

@NaviUpgrade is on the forum. You might have to sign into the Discord channel to contact him…

I’m around. Give me a call — usually the easiest way to reach me. My inbox has been flooded with spam and I’m not even sure how to combat it and sort it out at this point

Thanks NaviUpgrade. I left you a VM using the number from the website. Send me a PM if there is a better number to reach you at.

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I got a new APIM module and USB hub from NaviUpgrades, and I got it installed over the weekend. Everything seems to be working well with the new module, and my wife likes the new 3.4 interface better. I haven’t had a chance to test Apple Carplay or determine if there has been an improvement in BT connectivity, but I should be able to test that in the coming days/weeks.

In case anyone was interested, I’ve attached a few photos of the APIM I pulled out of the car. It is definitely different. There is no part number sticker on the front, and the secondary USB port is populated. Has anyone seen one like this before? Is this an early model version or a knock off part? Case halves show FoMoCo and there is an FCC ID

Only reason I could think the APIM was swapped is that your Edge has the 300A package without Nav. They may have swapped it to get Nav. No idea why they would remove the decal. Just a guess assuming you bought it used.
