SYNC 3, Version: 2.3 - Safe to update to the newest SYNC 3 ver?

Hello good forum people! I’ve been out for some time, had my 2017 Ford Escape, Syn3 Updater always worked amazing when updating my 2017 Sync version as well as navigation/maps.

I sold my Escape this Fall, and purchased 2018 Ford Edge SEL AWD, EcoBoost 2.0L I4 GTDi DOHC Turbocharged VCT from the local Ford dealership. SUV is amazing and I love it. Unfortunately it came with pretty outdated version of Sync3, as well as with old maps.

I’ll just retype what it says under Software Version:

SYNC 3, Software Version: 2.3
Build 17109_PRODUCT
Ford Motor Company

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN):
2***********6

Gracenote ® Version: 1.1.1.806 (NA-0010)
Portions of the content are copyright © Gracenote ® or its providers.

Navigation Maps Version: NA 1 15
Portions of the content are copyright © TeleNav or its providers.

SYNC Serial Number (ESN): W**X

I am wondering if it’s safe to update to the latest version of SYNC3 and of course, the navigation/maps.

Thank you for any advice you can send my way! Greatly appreciated!

Yes, it’s safe. 2.3.17109 should upgrade fine.

Here is the documentation for the Syn3 Updater.

Thank you for your kind reply, greatly appreciated!

I just noticed official Ford update page tells me there is an update for SYNC 3 for my vehicle (after punched in my VIN). So, should I download that one first and install it from the USB? It’s SYNC3 v3.0.20204

I’m thinking just to be sure I am updating to the latest version through SYN3Updater, from at least v3.0… or does it really matter?

Kind regards

It doesn’t matter but there is really no point in doing so. No benefit.

Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately, I received it when I came back to my house (you posted it while I was already updating), and since I did not have WiFi at the parking lot I did not get it on time to read it.

Regardless, it’s amazing to know that it does not make any difference, for future reference
At least my 2018 Edge SEL AWD is now on SYNC3 v3.0.20204 and I am ready to upgrade to v3.4.21265 when I get back from work later this afternoon.

Just a quick question if I may - I’ve received this message at the end, so I guess it wouldn’t be there if something was off. Also, I used one of my portable, empty external SSDs, a lot faster than USB keys, and more reliable in most cases.

Thank you so much in advance!

Log seems ok, but it’s not recommended to use USB disks. Try to find a decent USB stick and use that.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve used this same disk couple of times in my old 2017 Escape. Always got the best results. My USB keys always glitched on me, and I’ve had nice SanDisk and Kingston keys here, with plenty of memory (one was 32Gb and another one 16Gb).

This guy, Adam Rainey: UPDATING TO SYNC 3.4 USING CYANLABS! | LATEST SYNC 3 INSTALL! | FOCUS RS - YouTube
shows at 7 minutes and 14 seconds mark into his video, using the external, portable HD. I have SSD (no moving parts inside, no disks, nothing… similar system to any other USB key). Low power requirements device. Also, external SSDs are almost always way more reliable than USB keys if nothing else. Same like USB keys are way more reliable than SD cards will ever be… of course depending on the type of USB key and the manufacturer.

The very first comment under his video is from CyanLabs, and I couldn’t help not to notice they did not mention he should use USB key instead of the external portable HD. If there is one thing I’ve learned in my 25+ years of IT profession, is that these little portable things are way more reliable than any “small cards” type of storage.

Again, I used this same portable HD many times in the past to update my old 2017 Ford Escape, with zero problems. I had one reported problem here in this forum, and at that time I was actually using one of my USB keys.

EDIT: forgot to mention - very, very, very important! Some of those external HDs come non-formatted. People jump quickly to format those as NTFS, or FAT32, while in this case they should be exFAT. That is very important. These few USB keys and this portable (USB powered) HD, are all exFAT in my case. I use them exclusively for updating my car, nothing else.

You were asking for advice and to check everything was ok with the log, and I told you the recommendation is to always use quality branded USB thumb drives, no SD cards or external HDD.

Do you want to use an HD or SD card reader?, go ahead, it’s your vehicle and your choice.

If it works ok, if not the very first thing we are going to say is “use a quality branded USB thumb drive”, regardless of you may have seen in random youtube videos.

A external ssd will be fine, wouldn’t recommend a external HDD due to power saving etc.

This…^ SSDs seem to work fine as long as they are good quality from a reputable manufacturer, and the power saving feature is disabled. I would not use spinning disc drives, as those can shut off and draw significant power on the usb port. I use USB thumb drives because they are cheaper, and I have several setups on them specifically.

Yes, HDD require more power to run those moving parts, SSDs not so much. I understand SaNdMaN’s point though (not sure why he took it the wrong way). USB keys (not all of them) are practical, and nowadays quite inexpensive with large capacity even. I have some Kingston and SanDisk, and I love them. It’s just I’ve had that external enclosed SSD handy, and installed everything on it.

I might take SaNdMaN’s advice actually, and use this 64Gb Kingston DataTraveler instead. I’ll do that now, just to play on a safe side.

Thank you SaNdMaN, CyanLabs, and F150chief for your input! Greatly appreciated!

A SSD doesn’t work out being any faster than a reasonably modern usb drive anyway so if you have one, it’s probably best to just use a usb

Sorry if you misunderstood my tone, English is not my native language, I was just explaining myself that we always recommend using USB thumb drives. Users can do whatever they want really, free will and such…

Maybe I should had used different wording…

So maybe it came out strong without a real intention, so if you took it that way, sorry about that.

Unlike the message that you deleted which was deliberately ironic, rude and even childish.

But don’t worry, you won’t be banned, I’m not a child and to be honest I don’t really care.

It makes you wonder though, you deleted your message, I didn’t and explained a bit more…

Anyways, good luck with the upgrade.

Yes, I deleted my message, but I know it’s still visible, especially to moderators. I used to be moderator at one of the most respectable antivirus platform, but the lack of free time did not allow me to continue after 10+ years continuously moderating it :frowning:
Anyway, I deleted it only because I also reacted too fast and was kind of hurt by your words. My true intention with my initial post and my question was to make sure I am not doing something wrong jumping to the most recent version of the software and navigation, from super old version that was in my car. My sincere apologies! We are not kids, so no childish comments any more  Truce?

No truce! BAN!

Just kidding, i’ll let you and @SaNdMaN decide on this one

Of course man!, no worries, all is (and was) good.

Once you update your unit, please update the thread with the results, and remember to perform a master reset once it’s done

Yes, thank you for reminding me. I was actually thinking about Master Reset few minutes ago. I remember once I updated my 2017 Ford Escape (it was last year I believe), the update process went without a single problem or even a hick-up. But, once system was restarted, it would not show the new version of the software and maps for some reason, it would still show the old numbers (??)

Then I remembered someone mentioned Master Reset and how it easily resolves a lot of possible issues. I did it, and instantly after the system rebooted, I was able to see new software version numbers. I’m sure some other things can easily be fixed with Master Reset after the upgrade, so of course - Master Reset after the update is a must

Sure, I will post my results. I just created an update file on my Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 (64Gb), and later this evening, I will go and update my 2018 Edge.

Question if I may - right now, I am totally not worried about my saved destinations and favorite places. It’s because it’s totally empty, I just picked up this car on Monday. But for the future reference… if I have say 20-40 (not sure what is the limit or entries) favorites saved, is it possible to somehow back them up, so I don’t have to enter them manually every single time after some update? Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Posting back, as promised… everything went perfectly smooth. Update progress bar is such a help, allowing you to know which point of the update you’re at. Sitting without any visual feedback was nerve-wrecking, but this… amazing! It’s not that I see it for the first time, my last two updates on my 2017 Escape were like this… but I simply can’t stop getting amazed with how pleasant this update process really was.

My car’s SYNC3 is at 3.4.21265 and my Navigation/Maps are at NA 2 20

Thank you EVERYBODY, each and every one! Your work is amazing!
