Unable to upgrade sync 3 1.0 to 3.4

so i have a new to me 2016 f150 XLT with a sync 3 system that is still running 1.0.15139 and I am trying to update to 3.4 so i can get carplay to work with my new USB hub. but when i attempted to run the update nothing changed and i got the following message:

Error
The XML file you have selected does not contain the expected output
Syn3 Updater has determined you are on 1.0.15139 and may be using overlays
Syn3 Updater is unable to determine the configuration of your APIM
Please request assistance on our forum at https://community.cyanlabs.net

so any direction on next steps would be apprieciated.

also it appears the previous owner had ford replace the screen in april of 22 if that matters.

Someone has really messed up this Sync APIM. Since GJ5T-14G371-BFC - NON Navigation, you might be better off sourcing a newer unit, as this one will need to have the firmware reloaded, replacing the GB5T-14G374-AF file and reloading all of the software. It will need to be reformatted to clear the maps that were loaded and not compatible, and the Sync 3.2 voice file that was loaded somehow. The unit only has 8GB of storage.

Interesting, well right after i asked the question i came across the suggestion to do the 2.2 upgrade first, so i gave that a shot and it was effective. so i went for it with the latest 3.4 and it worked! so hello carplay! my screen is now more than a giant bright clock.

so somewhere between those 2 updates it reformatted what was necessary.

That’s good that it worked. It was reformatted on the 3.4 upgrade, so the map file should be gone.
