This is an update to my OP. The ebay seller shipped a new module and it works, 2020+ Chinese counterfeit and all. All functions work - buttons, reverse camera, remote start, usb ports, wireless android auto etc. Apparently it was just a bad module. Best of luck and thanks for the info!
