Updating Sync3 and maps to F11

I am in the using UK and am trying to update my system and maps as the Ford updater tells me I am already up to date (when I know I am not). I have followed the directions using Syn3, have placede the USB drive in the vehicle, it’s updated and asked me to remove the USB drive. When I come back to Syn3 and insert the USB drive it’s asks for the .xml file, which I have selected, but a warning message comes up stating that it can’t determine if my unit APIM is MY20 so not to proceed but to get my .xml file checked. Where do I post it for checking? What is the procedure now? I believe my car is now waiting for the updated files on the USB stick.

You can post the file here.
If Syn3Updater is not able to determine the APIM model, we will not be able to do it either.
But you say you have a MY20 vehicle, so assume your APIM is MY20 as well.
Why are you running the interrogator log exactly?.
Also, your car is not expecting anything, if you read the documentation I’m sure you saw that the interrogator log does not modify anything on the unit, it just extracts information.

Thanks for your reply. I just followed the instructions in the Basic Usage section. Looking at the documention in your link it seems I am better to just update the Sync3 system first, and then later try a map update?

If your unit is MY20, is it under warranty?

I’m assuming it’s MY20 as my car is a 2022 model, so still under warranty.

Is it possible to just update the Sync3 firmware first, and then just update the maps later (either with Syn3 or with Ford updates)?

Please do not double post (specially while quoting/replying to/ @ing someone else), there’s an edit button for a reason.

I would not mess with the unit then, since it’s brand new car under warranty, thus entitled to upgrades the official way. Plus, if anything goes wrong, everything is covered by the warranty.

Again, it’s time for you to decide which path do you want to follow.
My suggestion is using Ford’s as stated before.

And yes, maps and sync3 version (not firmware, firmware is something else) can be upgraded separately.

Sorry about the double post - still learning!

I have tried with Ford but all I get is ‘you are up to date’ - through the unit itself and my local Ford dealer. I can see on forums that people have successfully updated their systems using Syn3.

That’s really up to you to decide.
Lets do this: post the XML file you created while running the interrogator log against the unit, the very same XML that Syn3Updater cannot use to determine you have a MY20 unit .
That will tell us what’s on the APIM and what your options are.
Redact the Vin from the file’s title and content if you care about it.

File attached, without VIN.

I recommend you stay with Ford until you warranty is up for sure. There is very little if anything to gain by more recent versions. Odds are you have a 2020+ APIM and while you might think you’re not up to date when Ford knows what works best for your VIN.

Just be patient and Ford will release updates to you when the update is relevant to your VIN.

Thanks for the info.

Thank you for the log.
I’ve reviewed it, and here are your options:

a) leave the unit as it is as suggested and keep the unit within Ford’s upgrading path. It may be slow or delayed, but it’s official and covered under warranty (Specially since you have a MY20 vehicle)

b) you can leave Ford’s upgrading path and perform an upgrade with Syn3updater. Since you are on EU, you can go to latest F11 maps and Sync3 build. Since you can’t reformat a MY20 unit, you will have to autoinstall it, and it should take about 2 hours in which the unit must be powered on. And since your unit is MY20 you have some limitations.

But I agree with what’s been said before, I would not mess with an unit that’s new and still under warranty.

Fair enough, I’ll persue the updates with Ford. Thanks for your time and kind assistance - much appreciated.

Les, have you tried using the official Ford sync website to check your VIN and see if it offers an update?

My supplying dealer checked and stated that everything was up to date. I took the car to my local Ford dealer and they said the same. I’ve checked on the Ford Maps & Updates web site and it says the same too, hence trying to update with Syn3.

From the Ford Puma forum I can see that other owners have updated.

Give it time, and im sure you will be offered it in the next couple of months. Ford arent the quickest, hence this website.

Since you decided to stay within Ford’s upgrade path, I’ve marked your thread as resolved. It will be closed after 3 days of inactivity.

By the way, I agree with your decision :+1:
