Upgrading to a 4g TCU on 2014 Fusion Energi Titanium

Good to know. I am still running the -UM. I was thinking about upgrading to the -UP, but once I saw it prompt me on the Sync3 I didn’t see the reason to take the chance. Glad to hear it was successful for you. How long did the upgrade take?

I waited about 2 days and never did see the prompt on the car. Not until the new Sync3 went in. That’s sort of why I wondered if the Sync2 version wasn’t up to date. I couldn’t tell you what mine was as I didn’t look before I pulled it out. Might be worth looking in Forscan to see if an update is available for it too.

@warlock12118 - Thanks for the advice.

My car is a 2013 Fusion Energi and according to the Ford Site, there are no updates beyond 3.6 for the sync2. I was able to download the 3.10 update using a donor car VIN and was able to successfully install the update. So now my Sync system is at 3.10, however because the my VIN said there was no update available, I cannot send the update file to Ford. I am not sure if that will be a problem or not.

Wont be a problem.

Great! Then hopefully I will get a notification message soon.

@Retrofit2026 Do you have any idea how you were able to get the car to scan properly? I have done a master reset multiple times and reset the TCU to factory mode several times as well. But no matter what I try, every time I scan the VIN, I get the “Mobile Features Unavailable” message.

I have updated the firmware of the TCU and APIM to current and upgraded the SYNC 2 software to 3.10. I now just need the VIN to scan and send the request to the car, but I am at a loss on how to do that.

Update - I spent some time with Ford Sync support tonight. After about 30 minutes of them checking things, they came back and said my car is not compatible with the Ford App. I am not sure if that is because they think I have a 3g modem, or if it is because it is a SYNC 2 system. It may also be because they did not know what to do next. I am really not sure. In any case, I think I am stuck unless something cycles through the Ford system and allows me to add my car without the “Mobile Services Unavailable” message.

I may have hit a dead end. Not sure what else to try.

A 2013 never came with a TCU so of course they will say that. They are not going to waste their time trouble shooting a TCU for you on something they dont support and especially since they are not making money off of you?

Even if you get it to work there is no garentee that the BCM will support it. You might have better luck with a Sync 3 setup.

Except it did come with a TCU on the Energi models in 2013. My system used to work until the 3g system went down. Attached is a picture of the TCU I removed from the system and my asbuilt file. I used the old FordPass app until they stopped supporting the 3g system. I thought I could replace the TCU and get it working again.

This is unfortunately where I can’t say for sure if it was time or a specific combination of what I did to get the app to scan my VIN and accept it. Again, I never got the prompt on the vehicle to accept, but I was able to get the VIN to be recognized by the app. The steps I outlined above is what I did as best as I can recall when the VIN was finally accepted. I literally gasped when I saw it because I wasn’t expecting it. When I did it I made a conscious decision to leave it unplugged from the charging cable and always be in an “engine-running” state vs ACC after each prompt to restart.

Like I said, it could have been that Ford finally got around to changing something on their servers from an attempt I made several days prior. I just can’t be sure.

@Retrofit2026 Thanks for all the help. As far as I can tell, everything is configured properly. I will keep checking to see if it ever recognizes the car as having mobile services. Maybe it is just time that I need…
