2.2 to 3.4 Upgrade, AA Navigation Audio Low Quality and Latency

Hello all,

After many failed attempts using Ford’s updater to update from 2.2 to 3.0, I turned to the Sync 3 updater here to solve my issues. The install went smoothly and quickly. Everything works great EXCEPT now the audio channel that the navigation alerts (Google Maps and Waze) uses is low quality! This was not the case in the 2.2 version of Sync 3. Also, there seems to be some latency when it begins to speak. For example, instead of hearing “Turn left in 100 feet,” I hear “-urn left in 100 feet.” Any ideas what could be the problem? As stated before, these problems didn’t exist before I upgraded.

I did do a master reset after the upgrade and even tried messing with the Bluetooth AVRCP versions on my phone without much luck.

Could you run the APIM Interrogator Utility in the Syn3 Updater troubleshooting page. Post the results here, redact your VIN. Need to see the APIM asbuilt.

Not sure if I did this correctly, as when I try to open the XML in SYN3 Updater it gives me an error but…

If you used the -AD file, use the -AC file because of the older hardware. You can follow this tutorial…

Tutorial: APIM Interrogator Utility - Ford / Guides & Info - CyanLabs Official Community

Here it is again with the -AC file used, same error though “XML file could not be read, please ensure this is the correct file…” etc. Seems to be the same info, though

It’s not picking up the info. Try the -AB file. I don’t know if it will work…

I tried both -AB and -AA, both gave me install errors :frowning:

I thought they would. Try a master reset and run the -AC file again. The APIM has plenty of free storage so this should just work.

I’ll run it again with a fresh format/master reset/install tomorrow at work as I left my pc there. Any ideas what the overall issue with the audio could be, though?

As far as the audio, it could be the Bluetooth AVRCP on the Sync unit. Sync 3 has specific profiles for different models. Not saying it’s this, but it can’t hurt.

Also, if you have any equalizer settings or presets, clear those (default) and see if it helps. You should be able to turn down the volume on the phone for the connection. This might help.

I’ve tried forcing different AVRCP profiles on my phone, but none of them seem to have any effect. I’ve tried 1.6 and 1.4 so far with no real change. I could try 1.5 and 1.3 just for the heck of it though.

As for presets, everything was back to default since it was a reformat install and I changed everything back to how I liked it. However, it’s clear that the audio of the nav channel is simply coming through at a low bit rate and at a slight delay cutting off the first syllable.

It’s annoying, but tolerable. I’d really like to get it figured out, though.

Will this require a forscan connection to fix?

EQ settings on the phone…

Yes, probably.

Some updates:

Tried again this morning with no luck. Still get the same xml log with fresh install and reset. Not sure what’s up…

I forced the AVRCP version on my phone to 1.5 and it seems to have improved the sound quality. However, the lag still exists. I’m out of ideas :frowning:

I’m not 100% familiar with the way AA handles Nav Voices or Audio in general. So I could be very wrong.
But from my experience in AA it has the exact same bad quality when the voice is transferred as a call without connecting AA but only Bluetooth Handsfree. So I assume at least Nav and calls are going via Bluetooth in some way even when AA is connected.

So maybe turning the Option to transfer Nav Voices over BT off in your Nav-App improves the quality and removes the latency? (For Example in Google Maps there is a Setting “Play Audio over Bluetooth”.) Maybe that fixes it.

Turning that option off results in no sound at all, as I believe it then makes your phone do the announcing.

To further complicate things, I disconnected android auto and simply used Bluetooth for music and turned on navigation. Absolutely no issues at all! Sounds great, no lag… I’m thoroughly confused as what could be causing the problem

Sounds like an android auto issue to me. You are not the only one…searching Google on this subject brought up numerous posts about the lag in AA.

AA uses Bluetooth for all call audio/notification audio, Music is done via USB, try another cable specifically one that is decent quality, also in a upcoming AA update they are added a “cable tester” feature so that might help you also.

I’m just beyond frustrated honestly. I had the newest AA installed since I was a beta tester, so I figured I may as well downgrade it to the release version to see if that helps anything. However, it absolutely made it worse! The navigation voice quality (which I fixed) reverted back to the low quality and the cut off syllables are still there. Now, back on the beta version again and can’t get back to the good quality navigation voice. Ugh. The problem isn’t with music or media, only the navigation voice announcements. It’s low quality and gets cut off. Instead of “Continue straight” I hear “-ntinue straight”
