2017 F-150 on 3.0.20204 but Cyanlabs says MY20+

Hello,
Would like to help my friend update his 2017 F-150 but I am stuck due to MY20 protection.
Sync 3.0.20204 and Maps 1 18. Would like to update to 3.4.22200 and 2.21.
Cyanlabs says I am not able to update from 3.0 to 3.4 with MY20 protection enabled.
Is Cyanlabs correct to enable based on the Interrogator?

I don’t recall exactly how I ended up here, but Cyanlabs asked if I was MY20 and I said I don’t know, so it prepared and then read in the XML to decide yes.

The APIM model looks like a pre MY20 to me but I do not want to brick it.

Here is the interrogator creation log and the XML details. I also attempted to upload the XML with the VIN removed.

Thanks!

Of course it it’s, I’m not sure why you have doubts exactly.
The APIM the vehicle has is flagged MY20. You may be confused about the APIM being a J series one, but Ford started some time ago to release J series replacement APIM with MY20 hardware to the market (Ford’s logic).

Do not reformat it unless you want to brick it.
Have you searched the forums for the APIM model?, you won’t find happy endings.
If you still have doubts, you can always unmount the unit and check the stickers.

This is your best shot → Tutorial: Sync 3.0.20204 with 2020 NA2.20 Map Installation

Ok, so that means the truck had a warranty APIM replacement?
I just found the hardware database and I see by the APIM model it is flagged as a MY20.

From the tutorial link the only difference I see from what the truck has now is newer maps.
So the Sync version can not be updated to 3.4 and will stay as 3.0?
But Maps can be updated from 1.18 to 2.20?

Possibly, yes.
Is your friend the first owner of the truck?.

Yes, you can’t go past 3.0 without reformatting the unit (with or without maps)

Correct, that procedure will update the navigation, but won’t touch Sync3 version if you are to the latest one already.

Also take into consideration that newer maps are available but are locked, so can’t be installed with autoinstall. There are versions for Sync3 3.0 and 3.4, they are not the same files. The tutorial I’ve sent your way is for 3.0 versions.

I would also check if there are some kind of pending updates from Ford before performing an upgrade. If Ford has nothing to offer then yes, you follow that procedure.

No, he just purchased the truck from the original owner. I do not have the oasis records but I suppose it was likey replaced under warranty then.

Bummer it is permanently stuck on 3.0 without replacing hardware, so I am very glad I checked with you.

Ok, understood the maps files are different and that tutorial has the 3.0 compatible 2.20 maps. I will ask if he would like to try a maps only update or not.

Would purchasing the maps from Ford include 2.21 or is the 3.0 system only able to use up to 2.20? I think the answer is yes but just want to confirm. The Ford site does not say which version the purchase would be.

Actually, be glad that the person behind Syn3updater programmed it like it’s, hehe…
I’m just confirming what the program already knows (based on past user’s sad experiences)

And yes, you did well in asking before doing something else, because not asking is how one breaks things

I would try confirming the version first. There’s something called ESN lock, if the maps are locked you need a license to install them with autoinstall (safe for MY20). That’s why I first recommended you to double check if there are any update pending.

About buying maps, is it really worth it?. I mean, we are talking about a single version delta. I do not really care about maps, in fact my maps are from 2015-2016 I think.
I’ve used them 10 or 15 times since I own the car, most of them just to get familiar with the system in case I really needed it.

But this is my personal opinion: even if Ford has a 2.21 version for 3.0, I would not buy it. I would just install a free 2.20 from the Guide I sent before.

Yes I agree, I am glad Syn3 Updater asks and verifies… probably after many users unfortunately did not follow tutorial instructions.

For my curiosity: In the 3.0.20204 tutorial I see a map license as part of the 2.20 files, and in Syn3 Updater reformat method there is a license for 2.21, so why is the 2.21 not possible in this instance? ESN lock… for ths MY20 the license is generated per APIM rather than being generic?

I agree with you, likely not worth purchasing one year newer. Also not sure even going from 1.18 to 2.20 is worth it here, he uses Apple Carplay. But I will ask.

Sadly, we were not aware of replacement units until users started having black screens on what was known to be a safe non-MY20 APIM. Based on those reports, Syn3updater got smarter to check for those models.

It depends on the map being locked or not. 2.20 are not locked, 2.21 are.

Ok, thank you. I am clear now.

He did verify there were no pending updates from Ford.

Appreciate the very quick replies.
