4" to 8" Sync3 conversion issues

Hello All,

Some friendly advice would be much appreciated. I recently scored an 8" Sync3 screen and bezel for my 2018 F-150. The APIM attached to the screen came from a 2017 Ford Fusion. I swapped my APIM over to the 8" screen since it is a 2018 gen3 (I think gen3 is the correct term) and plugged everything in. The screen powers up fine, but it just displays the same 4" display in the top left corner. I am trying to update to Sync 3.4, and followed the automatic version using the Cyanlabs Sync3 Updater. My current Sync3 software is 2.3.17118. It seems to download way too quickly and also install extremely quickly. After “install” I run the interogator log file and I get an error stating “Failed with unexpected errors an overlay may be in place”. Not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated and I can follow up with whatever information anyone needs, thank you.

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Non Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 2.3.17118

New SYNC Version: 3.4.23188

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
I don’t have the exact words, but it says there may be an overlay in place after running the interogator log.

Update Method: CyanLabs Syn3 Updater

Syn3 Updater Version: 2.14.2.0

Syn3 Updater Documentation Read: yes

Hello.

What’s your end goal? Upgrade to 3.4?, or just get up to 3.0 with the proper screen size?.

Hey @SaNdMaN my end goal is both the proper sized screen and 3.4. I read someone’s post on here from a few years ago who did the same thing, but it seemed to have worked just fine for him. I am not sure why it did not work for me.

I’ve seen people have had issues with USB sticks. I am using a PNY brand USB 3.2 with 128gb of storage. I’ve formatted this drive prior to this on the Sync 3 Updater.

Any advice would help!

Thanks!

That’s the APIM, it’s a 8GB NO-NAV one, so installing 3.4 may need some package reduction.

Do you still have access to the APIM?. The reason I’m asking is because we have very little matches for that PN in our hardware db… it should not be MY20, but I would like to confirm with the sticker.

I can remove the screen tomorrow morning and update with the information on the back of the APIM. I doubt it is a MY20 as I remember seeing a manufacturer date of March of 2018 on the back.

That was what I was looking for, that makes sense for a J series APIM. So you should be good.

You can create the USB by just telling Syn3updater it’s not MY20 when it asks you that, that way it will bypass the interrogator log creation and produce an upgrade/reformat USB.

More information at Basic Usage - CyanLabs

Also, excuse my ignorance, but I only have 1 file in my USB drive and it’s not that large of a file at all. I’ll see if I can add that file to this chat, but I feel I am not getting everything I need when I do the automatic update. I could be wrong as this is my first time attempting this update. Most of the information I researched came from Naviupgrade’s YouTube page.

Check the basic usage link I sent before, that’s expected since based on your inputs syn3updater just created an interrogator log to produce the XML file for MY20 validation.

@SaNdMaN, your recommendation solved the issue I was having! I turned off the MY20 check and selected reformat. I also changed the connection to 1. Plugged it into my car and it fully updated.

Now I’ve got to get my power adapter harness to power my USB hub and get a Motorola wireless CarPlay adapter and I’ll be golden.

is there another adapter you’d recommend besides the Motorola?

Great.

No, I can’t recommend any CarPlay adapter since I’m an Android user. I bought a Moto MA-1 a few years ago, works like a charm. But it does not offer firmware update or settings change like other dongles. I haven’t needed any of that, but that’s something to consider.

Ok, well thanks for all of your help! I truly appreciate it!
