After interrupting an Sync 3.4.19200 to 3.4.22048 update, error "MEM_ERR01" appears

Hello,

I was in the process of updating (via CyanLabs Syn3 Updater) my 10" Sync 3.4 APIM from 19200 to 22048, but interrupted it after about 1.5 hours because I thought it had stalled out. Ever since then, I’ve been unable to upgrade from 19200 to any other version – even after multiple Master Resets. I tried updating with Ford’s Sync 3 USB package, too, but ran into the same error. The error presented is “MEM_ERR01”, which I think is because my Sync APIM’s storage is full.

Question: Is there a way to purge this storage and start over? If not, how do I fix this to where I can update to a version newer than 19200?

Do not use a disk, use a quality branded USB.

Please, create an interrogator log, run it against the unit and post back the results. Redact the VIN from the file’s title and content if you vare about it.

That will give us information about the storage on the unit.

I’ll work on the Interrogator log now. I have used multiple USB 3.0 drives from different manufacturers. This latest attempt was with an external HDD I had. I was grasping at straws at that point.

There’s only 1 GB of free space, that’s not enough for anything, really.

You need to remove gracenotes from the unt, check Syn3Updater utility tab to create a gracenotes removal USB.

Once you free up some space, will be able to proceed.

So, what you are trying to do is to only upgrade Sync3 version?. If so, once there’s enough free space, try to upgrade it WITHOUT gracenotes… We will see then how much free space there is … You may or may not install gracenotes…

Also, do you only need English as language?

I want to upgrade the Sync 3.4 build from 19200 to 22048 and update the maps, if the maps have changed. I’ll proceed with removing Grace Notes using that USB utility. Will that free up enough space to bring in the 22048 with the maps?

That’s the issue with generic opening messages :eyes:
From your opening message, you were only trying to upgrade sync3 version, no mentions to maps…

What map version do you currently have?

About the free space yes, it should free enough space to make the unit available for upgrading stuff. What stuff will be upgraded will depend…

If the unit is not MY20 and has not been serviced, if the map version you are currently using is no the latest, I would recommend reformating the unit with the latest map version.

I will be able to provide more details once I’m on a computer later. Proceed with gracenotes removal and rerun the interrogator to check how mu free space the unit has after that.

The maps I currently have per the About Sync page: NA 118

Yeah so since you want to update maps and sync I would just recommend doing the reformat.

Once you select a new maps package to install in the updated it should automatically put you into the reformat option.

You have 13 map files on the system, there are only 9 map files in the NA map sets. Somehow you have maps that are not deleted and consuming storage space.

You have a MY20 unit, DO NOT reformat this unit.

No. This APIM is corrupted and will require replacement at the dealer.

Disregard my message, didn’t realize it was MY20.

do not reformat

Something doesn’t add up here, how does a my20 unit have 2018 maps?

The existing maps work fine, so I’m not sure why that value states otherwise. What makes you this APIM is corrupted?

The maps do not list in the Embedded Consumer Applications Part Numbers report. The map files may be there, but you will not be able to upgrade the NAV without a proper listing. Since the unit is MY20 and you cannot reformat, there is no solution to the extra maps you have installed on the system consuming space. (This is the corruption I am referring to.) Also, MY20 vehicles come with NA 2.20 maps, not NA 18. You also have no map license listed on the system.

At this point you do not have the space to install Gracenote or even a small voice package without causing issues with the APIM.

When you used Ford’s Sync 3 USB package, was this a map upgrade package? A complete map update packaged from Ford takes at least 1.5 hours, close to 2 hours.

This is your storage map:

You now have 2.1GB free space. A proper installation of Sync 3.4 with maps should show about 4.3GB of free space. 2.1GB is marginal to work with and may not be enough to rescue the unit. I recommend you try following this tutorial. It might clear up the extra files or not.

I only attempted the Ford.com Sync upgrade option (see screenshot) after the OTA and Syn3 Updater route failed. I did not choose maps. I simply chose the Sync update option in the screenshot. I did however choose maps when I attempted doing the upgrade (multiple times) via Syn3 Updater.

Well, I finished work and it seems you have all the help you need, hahaha…
When I went into the details the other members already mentioned, it’s clear that your APIM is not right and you CAN’T reformat it since it’s MY20.

At this point, you CAN’T erase older maps, it’s not possible.

So. options:

A) Since it’s a 2020 car, maybe it’s under warranty. Go to the dealer and let them fix it. In fact, if the issue started with a Ford’s update, then they should look into that.

B) Make the most out of it, you could try installing the correct packages, but since there are other packages that should not be there there’s no real guarantee this will work or make things worse (Remember, every map package you install, you can’t delete it)

Since we didn’t hear back from you in 4 days and assuming no further assistance is needed, I’m closing the thread.
