APIM recovery install failing with Error in 4U5T-14G421-CBD_1615428261000.TAR.GZ

I accidentally bricked my APIM during an upgrade attempt when my starter failed. I stupidly turned it off and on at the wrong time, trying to start the car up.
After getting the vehicle back from the shop I followed the sync3flash process to recover the APIM and get it into a state where I could install. Initially, I attempted a standard MY20 install, but didnt realize I needed the reformat install. Once I realized the mistake I created a new USB using the manual process and was able to start the install. However, at about 17 mins in, the screen changes from one where it is performing the install to just a plane black lit screen.
I let it run some more but got no update, so I turned it off. The logs show Error in 4U5T-14G421-CBD_1615428261000.TAR.GZ
I redownloaded the file replacing it and trying again with the same error.
I located the version that was autodownloaded from syn3updater and tried that one, same deal.
The MD5 for all 3 files is the same 40BD485577A6B705F85B687F7575B07C, which is what it says on the site.

So, I found another person who had a similar issue only their original question was in Spanish so I missed it. F150Chief recommended an install of the Sync 3.3.19052 app file only using the reformat method. This actually worked, the unit appears to have powered on and I hear the radio now. However the screen is still black, likely because this version does not support the 10.1 inch screen I have.

I was able to successfully run the interrogator though so happy days.

Installed Packages

I know this is a NAV version, though it says non-nav. I think this is because I did not select to include any maps.
I used the tool to force the app into reformat mode and had it download and install only the app.
Going to try an update to the latest app to fix the screen and report back. Obviously if anyone has any information I should use let me know.

OK, so now its updated to 3.4.23188 and the screen is working.
I installed Voice Gracenotes and Apps on the install but left out the maps.
I started the car and installed the USB after 1 min and let it go. Not having a display I had no idea where it was in the process so I left it alone for about 30 mins. Went back and I had this.

Left it alone and it never got off this screen. I did confirm that 3.4.23188 got installed and it says gracenotes is in too. Unsure if Voice got added.

Attempted to run the interrogator, only now I get a package error when trying. I’m going to attempt a full NAV install and hope for the best.

Install appears to have completed. But I got an error at the end. But the error did not get logged to the drive. Or maybe it was an error because I left the car alone for about an hour…

Its still telling me non nav but has the Maps installed. I think this might be due to the asbuilt data and I’ll take care of that later.

ok.. according to the APIM database this model is non NAV, but the guy I bought it from says it is NAV.. Could I have messed up the install somehow?

The unit is a non-NAV, the fact that you have the compass showing indicates that the AB config is setup for a non-NAV APIM, otherwise you’d have a map fault error.

You need to repeat the reformat process, but this time set the files up for a non-NAV unit.

Problem is this is a MY20 unit and reformat is nor realistically an option.
Can I use the sync3flash process to restart without having to brick it again? If so, I’ll happily do it.

Jailbreak the unit, FMODS has a universal reformat utility that can handle MY20 hardware… You should look into that.

This is a NON-NAV APIM. Stop trying to install maps on it, it does not have the memory space to operate as NAV. Go buy a K series APIM with NAV if you need built in maps, otherwise use AA/CP.
