Audio Input Switching Automatically

Currently on 3.4.23188 but my car has done this since the day I got it.

I never use the radio, always music or podcasts from my phone with Android Auto (previously via cable, now I have an AAWireless dongle). If I get in my car and don’t start playing something from my phone within about 30 seconds to a minute, the car switches to FM by itself.

This wouldn’t be a big deal if not for the fact that the radio volume is significantly louder than when using my phone. So if I get out of my car with the volume at say 15, when I get back in and it switches to FM it’s WAY louder at 15 than my phone was (scared the shit out of me the first time it happened lol).

Googling this it sounds like it’s always been an issue with SYNC 3 and someone said if you switch to Sirius (without having a subscription, it’s just silence because it just shows your ID on the display that you would give them if you wanted to subscribe) and shut the head unit off, from then on it will default to Sirius instead of FM. I did this and it actually worked for nearly a year, and then suddenly started going back to FM and I can’t get it to default to Siruis again like I did before.

Battery is fine, it’s only a year old and has been tested since putting it in

That’s not unusual it varies by dongle manufacturer, who’s AA dongle are you using?
Have to remember Sync3 doesn’t support Wireless AA, so the dongle is providing an emulation to your phone.

It has nothing to do with the dongle, it used to happen when I just used a USB cable straight to my phone as well.

Also, all the dongle does is act like a phone over USB and handle data from the phone.

Dongle does a bit more than that, it uses BT to link to the phone and then creates a private WiFi network to emulate the USB connection.

What’s the model/year/trim of the car?
What’s the model of the phone, Android version and AA version?
I personally have had issues with models like a OnePlus that use a fork of Android rather than “pure” Android.

I’ve never been able to get Sync3 on any car to simply default to a source other than AM or FM when I just walk up to the car and turn on the ignition, that’s due to the ACM being fully booted up and ready before the APIM completely boots.
You can sometimes get it if you are doing a restart within 15 minutes as the APIM hasn’t gone completely to sleep.
I can get a connection to a USB drive with MP3s if I do a remote start first, that wakes up the APIM and powers up the USB hub before you start the car.

I happen to know exactly how the dongle works, as I assisted in a project that turns a Raspberry Pi into one lol.

2019 Ford Escape SEL, Pixel 7 on Android 15, AA 13.3.644654.

Again though, even if I don’t connect my phone at all it still switches so it really has nothing to do with the phone.

Ok, so you’re using one of your own creation and not say one made by Motorola (MA-1) ?
Since you’re not 3.4.x native, have you tried dropping the build down to 3.4.21265 or 3.4.21194
Have any other mods or changes been made anywhere in the car with ForScan?

No, I’m using an AAWireless dongle. I was just saying I contributed to a project for a custom Pi based one so I know how they work.

No other modifications have been made and I have not tried downgrading because this issue has existed since I bought the car before I ever even updated Sync with Syn3 and has existed on every version I’ve ever installed with Syn3 after I bought the car.

I also use a dongle and it’s like you describe.
Have you tried an USB with music?, I can’t remember if that also happens under that condition.

A dirty workaround would be to configure Android Auto to resume playback when connected, so music from your phone would start playing instead of the FM.

I’ve never tried a USB drive with music because I hae no interest in ever using that lol.

Also, yes I could set AA to resume playback, however the problem with that is I live in Canada and I remote start my car from inside my house on very cold days before I leave for work. If I turn on auto resume, when my car is remote started my phone connects from inside my house and starts playing, which means I lose my spot in whatever podcast was last playing.
