Black Screen after trying to update from 2.2 to 3.4

Hello after reading many posts in the Forum im still kinda helpless. I tried Updating from 2.2. to 3.4, at first everything went normal and the Screen rebooted after i plugged in the USB. But then nothing happend, the screen stayed Black but is backlit. After waiting for 20 min i unplugged the USB and tried again, with no sucess. Music is still playing and i can change the Volume but nothing is happening on the Screen. The Car doesnt have a Backup Cam so i cant try that. I tried Keycycle, multiple Soft resets, tried creating an Logging USB and pluggin it in (left it in there for 5 min) but no .xlm was created. What would be the next step? Im greatfull for any help!

Hi.

Do you have forscan and an adapter?, if so share the APIM’s asbuilt seen through Forscan.

Has the unit even been serviced?.

About the interrogator log, was it created for 2.2 and 3.4 separately?.

Finally, and this is very important. Did you ever see “the mustang screen” with the progress bar and green screen at the end of the process?.

Thanks for the reply! No i did not see “the mustang screen” or the green screen. I have an adapter, need to see if my forscan license is still valid. As far as i know the unit hasnt been serviced.

So, what happened is that you plugged the USB in while on 2.2, you saw “installation in progress” (or something among those lines) and the unit booted into a black screen but with audio still playing ?

If so, have you created the interrogator log with 2.2 as your current Sync3 version in syn3updater?

Oh, I think you can use the free version of forscan for reading the asbuilt… license is required for more sensitive stuff…

Thats exaclty what happened. Yes i created the interrogator with the same settings( 2.2 ). But nothing happens when i plug it into the USB in my car. The screen stays black and backlit. I will look into getting forscan on my laptop rn.

Sure, send a picture o screenshot of it.
Also, since you are on Forscan, share the APIM model read as well.

Hello, it took a while but i figured it out. I hope this is what you asked for.

I also did a “on demand self test” ot the Apim insinde Forscan, but there was no Error.

Yes, that was what I was asking for.
Question: when you start the car, do you briefly see any image on the screen?, the boot screen?.

No. The screen only turns on and the Music starts, but its only the backlight.

Your case is strange, and I’m running out of ideas.

Question: when you originally plugged the USB in while running 2.2 with the screen on, you said it restarted into a black screen. I would say the time between the USB going in and the reboot was just a few minutes. After that reboot, was music playing?.

Im not really sure if music was playing, i plugged the USB stick in and after 1-2 Minutes it restarted into the blackscreen. What would be the normal steps to troubleshoot this ?

I’m just going to think aloud.

As per your previous comments:

  • you created a reformat USB
  • you plugged such USB into the unit
  • the unit rebooted into a black screen after about 2 minutes
  • you unplugged the USB after 20 minutes
  • the unit seems operational because of music playback

Can you share the APIM model?, you can check that via Forscan since the module is still recognized.

I do not know what may be wrong here, the asbuilt seems ok… but the main issue I have is the fact that the sequence you described “does not add up”, and here’s why: if for whatever reason the unit rebooted itself before the reformat package was installed, nothing should had changed, right?. And it seems the unit is operational, so it’s not bricked.

If the unit is MY20 and the installation of the reformat package was successful (hence the reboot), you would not have music playing in the background…

Additional questions:
A) do the USB ports work?. If you plug in an USB with a lot of music, is it read?. Do the ports have any light?
B) does the unit have voice commands?, can you interact with those?
C) have you tried recreating an interrogator log via syn3updater with 2.2 configured as your current build?.

I didnt find the APIM Model in Forscan, where can i read it ?

The USB Port still works but it gets even weirder. When i connect my Phone via USB it starts charging and Carplay starts, playing my music over Spotify. My Phone even got a Notification if i wanna use Carplay on my Sync 3 while the Phone is locked. Then i noticed that the steering wheel controls for Volume and Voice Commands dont work anymore.

Yes, i tried creating an Interrogator USB for 2.2 and for 3.4. I waited for 10 min each time since i cant see anything on the screen and checked if an .xlm was created, both times no.

Can i try to create another 3.4 USB and install it or would that make my issues worse ? Is there any way to check what version of Sync is now installed without the Display in my Car ?

This keeps getting weirder, indeed.

Once connected, you should go to configuration / programming, it should be listed there among the other modules. Look for Accessory Protocol Interface Module.

You can also check the Module’s section.

This confirms the APIM is not bricked at the moment.

That’s weird.

Hard to say, because I’m not sure what’s going on. Again, thinking aloud based on past experiences and what you said: if the reformat process actually got triggered you interrupted it by removing the USB at about 20 minutes in. A reformat for EU NAV APIMs takes about 45-60 minutes, removing the USB would leave the unit not-operational.

That (plus other things already discussed) kinda tells me the reformat package was not installed and the unit is still running 2.2. It’s just a guesstimation…

You can try that, but what I would try first is the following: via forscan change both DE01/7D0-02-01: xxxx-**xx-xxxx and DE02/7D0-03-01: xxxx-**xx-xxxx from 01 to 00, apply the settings and reset the module via Forscan for the change to be picked up. If nothing changes, revert them back to the current value of 01. You can see the references for those values in our https://cyanlabs.net/asbuilt-db/sync3-apim/ , under the Theme category.

Has the unit even been serviced?, maybe a screen or/and APIM replacement?

Changing the things you said sadly did nothing. I rebooted the APIM with forscan but it also didnt fix my issue.

Here is the info about my APIM (i deleted the VIN). Why is there a difference in the latest known Calibration Level?

And here are a couple DTCs, maybe something is hinting at my problems.

Thanks alot for your help so far! i would be lost

Those codes are all over the place… the APIM one is that you have issues with the GPS antena (open circuit), and the BCM that there are some issues with lights…

Has the unit even been serviced?. How old is the car’s battery?.

Honestly I’m running out of ideas.

About calibration, I would not know about that, but as far as I know calibration enables new features or enables new hardware on the car. If all your car is stock, and the screen is stock, calibration should not be an issue.

Going back to the DTCs, you could take note on each one of them and clear them all to see if they return… maybe they are just old…

Please go in and clear your DTC’s so we can see what is left.
