Black Screen after upgrade attempt from 3.4.21194 to 3.4.22110

2019 Ford F150 Lariat w/NAV (NA). Not the original owner so don’t have history beyond 2-3 months ago. I had previously modified a few settings to include Autofold Mirrors (Lincoln style), Fake Engine Noise disable, Auto Start/Stop disable, Heat/Cool icons on display screen. These mods were all working as expected prior to this update attempt.

Attempted update from 3.4.21194 to 3.4.22110 (NA - including maps). Setup USB using default settings (Autodetect). Selected “yes” at first warning and completed “interrogator tool” process. After running the interrogator tool, checked the XML file which indicated Syn3 Updater determined my APIM is NOT MY20 and is safe to use all functions of Syn3 Updater; proceeded with upgrade process.

The upgrade process started and showed the “Updating system software…” message. I then saw the next message indicating the first part of the update was compete and that a restart was needed. I was driving and was not able to cycle at the time; the USB drive was still in the port. The system rebooted on it’s own and eventually came back up to Sync on an older version. The system proceeded to display another message indicating “Updating system software…” and it eventually displayed an “Installation complete” message stating I could remove the USB drive and that the updates would take effect the next time I restarted the vehicle. The screen turned off (went black) and has never displayed anything since.

I have tried multiple soft resets, disconnected the battery for 30+ minutes and checked fuses. The ring lights around the USB ports do not light up at any time. My trailer backup assist pro indicates the functionality is not available when pressing the button. I have not hooked up forscan to see if the APIM is viewable.

Looking for ideas/thoughts on what I might be able to try to recover the system before taking it to the dealership for another 20+ day wait on repairs.

Looking up the VIN Factory asbuilt indicates that the Sync APIM is the original unit to the vehicle and is NOT MY20+, so using the reformat tool should be safe. APIM info:

This is all normal. The installation script will reboot the APIM, no action is needed on your part.

Did you remove the USB at this point when it said the installation is complete?
Did you ever see the Mustang screen or the Green screen?
Hopefully the unit is just stuck in the reformat mode. You say the USB port lights do not light. This is an indication that the APIM is not booting.
Did you place the USB back in the vehicle?

I did remove the USB drive at the point it said I could remove it. Shortly after removing the USB drive (I was driving at the time), the screen turned off and nothing has displayed again; no Mustang/Ford emblem, no green screen… nothing.

I did attempt to put the USB drive back in the port for 5 minutes or so as one of my troubleshooting steps. There was no activity that I could see. I even tried to re-run the “interrogator tool” process using another USB drive; turning the car on, letting it sit at idle for a few minutes, inserting the interrogator USB drive and waiting 5 minutes. The XML file was never written to the new drive.

I tried USB ports both in the center console under the screen and in the back seat area. I have spent 30+ minutes in the vehicle with the engine on after the screen no longer displayed anything (if that matters). There has been no change in screen behavior with any of the troubleshooting - nothing has displayed since it went dark.

As an additional FYI - Forscan appears to indicate it can read the APIM module however, when I attempted to do an APIM module test it failed indicated the requirements were not met (engine off - it was; no phone call - not on the phone; nothing in the USB - nothing plugged in). Will do some more review tomorrow afternoon/evening. Still no change in screen behavior; nothing displaying.

As per the documentation you shouldn’t do this, but this is unlikely to cause the issue.

What you are describing is a typical scenario of a “MY20 hw reformat”.
The first reboot into an old UI style was the first stage “downgrade into 3.3”, and the 2nd reboot into a black screen was the reformat phase being initiated.

Do you think you could gain physical access to the unit?, you would have to unmount it.
If you could do that and take pictures of the stickers on both the UNIT and Screen would give us more information.

Based on what’s been said until now, there should not be any MY20 component… but we are all assuming this based on serials and part numbers…

My guess, without further diagnostics like @SaNdMaN suggested is, the screen is a MY20 display.

Since he is not the first owner, maybe it got replaced.

Time permitting, I will attempt to open the console and get some pictures. Outside of that, is there any way to revert the theme using Forscan?

I thought about that, but since it went from 3.4 to 3.3 (downgrade) without issues and now the USB ports are not even working (let alone the unit itself), I kinda discarded it. Does not hurt to check it.

Can you scan the unit?, is it somehow responsive?.
If so, check these values:

Think I found the problem… /sigh XML interrogator files shows a response of “5U5T-14G381-ET” for the APIM but the module is actually “KU5T-14G371-CDG” manufactured in 2021. :frowning:

@SaNdMaN I checked those values as well and they were both set to 01 as I would expect them to be.

In the XML file you provided it had this, presumably you said you were not MY20 during run of Syn3Updater?

EDIT: nope you are on a model that unfortunately we have not previously seen nor marked as MY20

@CyanLabs Just my luck this last month or so… :roll_eyes: Thankfully the truck is a CPO. I’ve already made the appointment. Unfortunately, it’s over a week out until I can even drop it off. Then it’s another 5-7 day wait before they’ll even look at it.

You can always replace the APIM with another one on ebay,

Not that it helps you but this model has now been added to the “MY20 Models” database

Well… this is getting worse and worse…
You are the first user that has a K series APIM with MY20/+ hardware, until now some J series APIM had that issue. Sadly, you inaugurated the K series drama…
Neither J or K series APIM should be MY20.

It seems it’s not 100% safe to trust the model number anymore…

About your car, it seems it got replaced recently without you knowing it.

@SaNdMaN I was just thinking about your comment about it being replaced. My truck was recently in for ~4 weeks for issues with the parking sensors, lane keeping and rain sensing wipers. I looked back over the paperwork and don’t see a comment about them replacing the APIM but what do I know… /shrug

None of those things should be related to the APIM

Out of curiously, if I were to look for another APIM unit instead of waiting on Ford - what would/should I look for? The exact same model (KU5T-14G371-CDG) that’s currently in the vehicle? Are there multiple models that would work? TIA!
