What does it mean when my screen goes black while trying to update?

Is there anything i can do to fix this short of going to the dealership?

Did you run the Interrogator Utility to make sure the APIM is not MY20+?

I wish I had more accurate information but my screen is black so I can’t see anything. Actually I took a photo a few weeks back it was 3.0 build 23219
No I didn’t run the interrogator utility, I guess thinking my car was a 2016 model I didn’t need to.
Do you have the autoinstall.lst and reformat.lst files from the USB? Can you post them? Just drag them to the reply window…

Did you ever see the reformat screen come up with the horse, mustang, and Ford logos?
Nothing wrong with the files themselves. Are the names on the files matching the names in the reformat.lst file?
Any error messages that flashed by?
the Ford logo did flash by but then it stayed black. on previous times I just got a ticker that said sync usb detected or something a like but It just flashes by for a quick second, But that was prior. At this try the screen just went from ford logo to black.

nothing else in the usb ports. I have a 2016 cmax and I’ve been trying to upgrade to sync 3.4 for two months now, it’s been a slow process. The usb port in the car is currently the one that came with the car but I’ve switched the hub back and forth with a newer one. when the screen went black the usb hub installed was the one that came with the car.
This morning I started the car and all was normal. The car just sat plugging in over night.
Do you think I can just try again with the usb?
Maybe this time run the engine and maybe take it for a drive. It will take about 30 minutes, and you will not key cycle anything till it’s completed. Use the files you posted and make sure everything matches like the names, etc.
I did notice the file names on the website end with .gz but the files on my usb end with .tar
Is that ok?

The file names must match exactly. You can’t just add a file extension. I suspect that the computer you are using is not showing the file extensions.
Does the computer show the reformat.lst and autoinstall.lst files correctly? If so, then the files you are using have been decompressed, as they are .gz archives and must stay that way.

The Mac unpacked the files when you downloaded them. They need to be kept as .tar.gz files or the process will fail.

Hi So all that happens when I plug the USB in is a message at the top time/temp area of the screen that says sync3 usb detected. Other than that nothing ever happens no matter how long the car is on. I have a new sync3 update usb I bought from sync but it doesn’t update me as far as 3.4 is any of the files on that stick useful?
