Hello, I had Sync3 with 2.2.16280 version in it. I tried to update it via WIFI multiple times without luck. Then I tried with USB and with the Fords website (3.0.20204). After 2 hours I gave up. Next morning I setup Syn3 updater for the latest (likely 3.4.23188) and went to car. When I turned car on (not USB inserted yet) the screen said something that the update will be visible after next restart. I got scared a bit, because I was looking forward to update to 3.4. I proceeded to put the USB in, I got some popup immeadiately, and quite soon the screen went black.

Now screen does not function. It is backlit, USB ports have power and radio works. Rear view camera does not come to screen when I reverse. I tried to open the plastics to see which date the APIM is manufactured, but I cannot get the plastics out. I got some clips open but am afraid that I break things if I proceed. Car is from 2017.

Browsing the forum I am afraid that I bricked it.

Hello.

This should be a lesson learned: without having sufficient information you just went through the process (ignoring multiple warnings) and only when things went wrong you started researching… That should be the other way around: first research, then proceed.

Do not take this the wrong way, it’s a great lesson to learn to avoid breaking other stuff in the future.

Now, to your current issue: if the backup camera does not work when reversing, that means the APIM is almost dead. You see, that video feed does not go through Sync3, so if the APIM was operational, you should see the image.

What does not make a lot of sense is that you say the USB ports have power… if the unit is bricked, they should not have power.

Is the unit operational somehow?. Leaving the black screen aside, do you see a splash screen?, does bluetooth work?, some audio?, any sign of life?.

Have you tried pulling the fuse to force a reboot?.

Do you have forscan and an adapter?

Yes both USB ports give power. FM radio does work and phone connects to car via bluetooth.

What is splash screen? I don’t have forscan nor adapter. I will try pulling fuse off, wait for a moment and put it back.

This is a very good sign, the unit is not fully dead and somewhat operational.
Perform a soft reset.

When the unit starts, it usually displays a “boot screen” that may be a Ford logo or something else, then goes into Sync3 UI. That boot screen is the splash screen.

You will need that to read the APIM’s model number and also possibly change some values. Based on what you are describing, there’s a chance the APIM’s configuration is wrong.

15-30 minutes should do it, but before perform a soft reset since the unit seems to be operational.

Splash screen: I remember it showing Ford logo before the incident while starting. I cannot see that anymore. Only thing changing in the screen is the backlight, there might be two brigthness stages for it. But nothing else.

Do I need this OBDLink® EX - OBD2 Adapter For ELM327 & FORScan as an adapter? I found used ELM327, would that be enough?

Pulled the fuse off, waited 30min, put it back on, turned car on. Still black screen.

For basic troubleshooting any decent adapter should work.
The recommended adapter for more advanced functions via Forscan is OBDLINK EX, to the point they have a link on their site “Download FORScan”

So, if you have a cheap adapter at hand, try it before purchasing one.

Setup a new installation USB with the old version showing the new updated version from Ford that you did(3.0.20204).

I doubt it’s bricked but it is definitely confused. Based on the answers you gave Sandman it’s probably not bricked but there is always that risk.

Thank you bill32399 also. This might also be the case that the Ford 3.0.20204 update (that perhaps went through) and then CyanLabs update on top confused the system.

I still have the USB stick with 3.0.20204 update in it. Did I understand correctly that you suggest me to plug the USB stick with the 3.0.20204 to the USB port of the car? Should I just leave it be for an hour for and hope it updates somehow? Just wondering how to know if it does anything with the black screen.

No, Setup a new car configuration showing the current version as 3.0.20204 and then make a new USB with the version you trying to get to. I am guessing this will basically start you fresh and at the new version you select. Just a theory so Sandman may suggest something different.

Thank you for clarification. Before I try that, should I first try to get my hands on ODB adapter and try to check APIM year with Forscan to make sure I don’t have MY20 unit?

Thats not a bad idea. Sometimes it’s a simple AB option. It will also help trouble shoot it.
