Blackscreen after upgrade to 3.4.23188

I attempted to update my '23 Explorer’s Sync from build 22251 to 23188. After installation the screen and USB ports are unresponsive and without power. Preeeeety sure I bricked the APIM but I’m posting to see if it can be saved. I’m working to get the APIM hardware ID now and will include that info shortly.

That does not make a lot of sense, are you sure that’s the USB you used?

Yep, same one. I previously used it to create an RW Data Cleaner USB and ran that with success beforehand but I formatted the USB again prior to loading the 23188 installation files.

Nothing from the screen. It stays black at startup and soft reset. The USB surrounds will briefly light up after an engine start and a soft reset but will go out after about 15 seconds.

Can you elaborate what happened after you connected the USB?. How much time passed since you connected it until the unit rebooted?

After I connected the USB it started the installation process and notified me at the top of the screen. I waited about 5 minutes for the install to complete and saw a popup on the screen saying the install was complete and would need a restart for updates to take place. Immediately after dismissing the popup the screen powered off and wouldn’t respond. I let the vehicle run another 15 minutes with the USB in the port thinking there was another step but never saw any further signs of life. I pulled the positive battery terminal today and let it sit for ~30 minutes and when I reconnected the cable and started the vehicle the screen was still black.

Here’s the screenshots. Weirdly, the filenames in the SyncMyRide don’t match what I have in the Syn3 Update log and I don’t have a log from this particular time yesterday. The top 4 entries from 7:10pm to 7:38pm are RW Cleaner creation logs where I was battling the issue with not enough room in the APIM memory to run the cleaner but I was thinking it might have been an issue with the Cleaner file itself. I finally got it to run on the 4th attempt and then created the interrogator file an hour later at 8:31 pm.

That’s a reformat USB, which would cause exactly what you saw while upgrading and the aftermath. Now we can say that:

Yep, it’s dead.

You can try this → GitHub - bigunclemax/sync3flash: Ford Sync 3 reformat flash tool , but it requires knowledge and equipment.

There’s not much to do, really…
You can’t reformat a MY20 unit, since it kills it…

Welp, I’ll own that mistake. That’s what I get for getting excited that I was making headway with correcting the issues with 3.4.22251.

For my own edification, and hopefully to help others, do you know where I went wrong in the process of creating the update? I made sure that MY20 protection was enabled and that I was selecting the correct build, region, and map version.

One quick thing, before I answer to that… can you please open a terminal (CMD) on the computer you used for creating the USB and executing “hostname”?, that will give your computer’s “name” back… What is it?.

I will now answer your questions:

The USB you sent the screenshots for, the one that you actually ran against the unit, could not have been made if MY20 protection was active. It was created with MY20 disabled, and it was a different USB device from the log that you showed.

What’s really odd about all of this is that there was a log submission, but only one and the one you are missing from that list.

Did you work on this little project alone?, maybe multiple people tried stuff and one generated the wrong USB… It’s really hard to know…

But what’s clear is that from what I’ve seen, someone generated a reformat USB with MY20 protection disabled. And again, I’m talking about a different USB device from another brand, not the one that shows in the log you sent before…

Do you share your computer with someone else?.

Since you are NA based, you may consider contacting Naviupgrade, he provides a recovery service for these kind of APIMs, which is cheaper than a new APIM…

2023 NA you “might” be able to get Ford to eat the replacement since they have a CSP for vehicles that haven’t upgraded to .23188.
Check your FordPass and see if the CSP shows for your vehicle, tell the dealer that this is what you got when you tried to do the upgrade with the file downloaded from the Ford owner site. Yes it’s a lie, but its it to you if you want to eat the labor and cost of installing a new APIM.
