Bricked APIM

Help me please. I bricked the APIM on my 2020 Ford Escape. What should I do? I updated the screen from 4” to 8”. I then wanted maps for my 8” screen, as it can support that. I ignored the warning message on Cyan Syn3Updater and I clicked no I do not have a 2020 model. Now the 8” screen doesn’t work at all. (no reversing camera, radio or anything), and all I can see on the 4” screen is it says: “version: 306 Please insert USB stick”. Every stick I try from Syn3Updater doesn’t work – the screen turns red and says: “Error update packages not found”. I can not download the latest version from Ford because Ford say my system already has it, (before I started, I connected the car to my Wi-Fi and updated it). Taking the battery out, changing USB sticks, all things not worked. I went into Ford and they said I need to Reboot the system by using the OBD port. I saw online something about FORScan and OBD2 cables. I was wrong to say no on the message. Does anyone know what I could do to fix this? Is there any links someone can give me to show me what to do?

You have a 2020+ APIM and you ignored the warning about having a 2020+ APIM. You have just essentially bricked your APIM and will need a new one. Forscan can’t help you by rebooting it.

On a side note you say your APIM is nav but than your log shows you don’t. You might want to decide which one is true.

You’re also using a card reader USB adapter which is not a good idea and your advised against doing that.

I am guessing you did not read the documentation before you did any of this?

Thank you for you message. There is so much varied information, I have got very confused. My new 8" screen (LJ6T-18B955-FC) says it has GPS and I thought if I installed maps it would work?

Can I get any Ford APIM or will I need a specific age or model to match my escape?

You can buy any APIM and it will work but you cannot use a 2020+ APIM and reformat it for maps.

I would look for a K series APIM, These are Model numbers that start with a K.

You might check with @NaviUpgrade and see if he can save the APIM for you or has one you can buy.

That’s the reformat mode. One thing you could try (under your own risk) is to set any 3.0.xxxx as current build and create a new USB (not a card reader) with the target desired versions while the 4’’ screen is connected, once it’s done, install the 8’’ screen. Make sure no other device is connected to any USB port.

If that does not work and the unit ends up dying, you will have to replace it.

Nah, I do not think that’s the case here… How much “varied information” is to confirm you do or do not have MY20?, really simple, right?.. Our documentation is pretty straight forward…

I wonder if you omitted saying basic things like “hi” or “thanks” because you are still confused…

Actually K series has a problem in the 2020MY+ Escape because of the HVAC controls and other center stack requirements.
Minimum F188 is 1U5T-14G374-EH
Minimum F168 is 5U5T-14G379-BB

Hello, Thank you for your message. What is F188 and F168?

Could I please check with you: On my new 8" it said it can have maps, but the APIM also has to show that it can have maps? bill32399 Said my current APIM can not have maps. So what APIM should I look for with my 2020 Escape?

This is the internal firmware/calibration level of the APIM, it has nothing to do with Sync but everything to do with the unit working in the car correctly.
A G/H/J/K series will not work correctly, you need either an L, M or 5U5T North America APIM.

For factory NAV you need one with 32Gb of memory in it, I’d look for one out of a yard. Avoid anything from China like the plague.

Hello SaNdMaN, Thank you for your messages. I am quite a handy person, but this is new to me. The language/words/text are foreign and take a lot of hours to understand. For me, there is a lot and inevitably I have got confused and made basic mistakes, as when learning or trying anything new. I am really grateful for your response, and I would like to respond to you again:

Does the target desired versions mean I can select the latest 3.4.23188 and have a maps version or should I select older versions and not have maps? My Screen said it can have maps, but I thought my APIM cannot work with maps?

I am sorry if I have done wrong on this forum by not using “Using basic things like hi or thanks”… enough. But, on the thread you refer to, the first thing I said was “thank you”: [quote=“Wolf, post:3, topic:14552, username:Wolf”]
Thank you for you message.

You are correct in saying I am confused, and I also have made simple mistakes. I will keep learning and I will try to add more “basic things” to improve. I am very grateful for your feedback, both technical and linguistically. I hope you will continue to help me in both areas. Thank you so much, I look forward to speaking more with you.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your continued responce.

For factory NAV with 32Gb. Do you mean the USB stick or the APIM needs 32Gb?

I have ordered some good new USB’s from Amazon. Can I have NAV (maps), on any L, M or 5U5T North America APIM?

The APIM.
A NAV APIM has 32gb of storage, a non-NAV only has 8gb.

You can have maps on ANY North America NAV APIM, for it to work correctly in a 2020MY Escape you need a North America NAV APIM which is an L/M/5U5T.
To use an example you could use one from a 2020 Fusion LS7T-14G370-BCH and then drop your factory AsBuilt into it.

You should set the desired versions to the most recent ones available.

I’m not sure what you mean, the screen is just a monitor, it says what the processor (APIM) tells it to tell… If you mean that a 4’’ screen “can’t” have maps you are partially right and wrong at the same time, since maps reside on the APIM, no the screen, but a low size screen “can’t” show maps.

Remember that being polite, specially to strangers on a free forum through cold letters and text, saying “hi” and “thanks” go a long way… I doubt you enter a store and just go “I want pizza”, right?. Your opening message had nothing like that, it was almost as you were requesting service… for free… with no hi… no thanks…

Going back to your unit, this is what I get from your opening message is that your APIM is not dead yet… If you use the 4’’ screen you see something like this:

image

This is the reformat phase, it needs a reformat USB to complete the installation…
If with the 8’’ screen the APIM does not boot nor show anything on the screen, that makes me think your APIM is not really MY20 but your screen is…

If my assumption is correct, by doing this

You should be able to complete the process with the 4’’ installed.
If your APIM is 32GB it can hold NAV.

Once the installation process is completed, you can switch to the 8’’ screen.

The unit won’t be operative until the reformat process is completed.

Reread my post, I never said that.

Hello, thanks for your feedback. It’s really great for me.

When I said:
“My Screen said it can have maps, but I thought my APIM cannot work with maps?”

I read somewhere that it said my 8" screen (LJ6T-18B955-FC), has the GPS features. So having MAPS/NAV is dependent on the screen. However, now I think I understand that to be wrong. It is to do with the APIM. So, if I get my APIM working again, I can not have NAV on it? The APIM’s need to have 32GB and maybe mine doesn’t have that.

On my old log (I did before I bricked the APIM), how can I read it to see if it supports NAV and see how many GB it has?

I was very happy when I saw that. My 4" screen does look like (with a car picture), sometimes, and other times it just has the ford logo. It does say “version: 306” at the top right. However, at the bottom it just says: “Please insert USB stick”. However, when I try your steps, the screen turns red and says “Error update packages not found…”

Do you know how I might be able to see if my APIM is MY20 from the old log?

I went into Ford and spoke to the manager, he kindly agreed to put the Ford sync system onto a USB for me. He said the USB needs to be 64GB. I gave this to him and came back later. But when I came back he said it did not work. He could not get it on the USB because my USB needs to be at least version 3.2 and the data he is puting on the stick is over 50GB (not maps - I think). So, I went away and returned with a new USB, version 3.2 with 128GB. I will pick this up later.

May I please ask you: Do you think the problem I am having is because the USB I’ve been using is a SanDisc Ultra 3.0 64GB?
