I originally tried to do the sync update per the ford website since my apple carplay stopped working when I got a new ios update. I tried via USB and wifi (wifi never got past the “searching”), and got INSTL_ERR12. I tried the manual update on your site since I have a mac, however am still getting this error code. Any advice?
SYNC Region: NA
Navigation Variant: Non Nav
Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20
Install Type: OEM
Old SYNC Version: 3.0.17276
New SYNC Version: 0
Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
INSTL_ERR12
My apologies! I honestly thought I was filling out a help form the way the site looked - I wasn’t sure it was linked to the community forum. Is there a video on the interrogator log? I do see it under utilities, but I was looking for some more into since I am new to this stuff. Thank you!
Following up to say I also got that error code when trying to run the RW cleaner after soft and master resets. Not looking good. I appreciate your help regardless though! If anyone has any last minute tips or tricks, they would be much appreciated.
Yes, it does not look good.
Does the Master Reset complete and works?, what do I mean: does it actually remove user data?.
At this point, if the unit does not process a simple interrogator log package, I’m pointing towards a bad APIM. The error you are having, INSTL_ERR12, is a failure to create a directory on the APIM.
Ok, so that basically says the APIM is not working fine… If a master reset does not delete stuff then you should consider replacing it for an equivalent one…
Thank you for your help! I took it to the dealership and they updated it but can’t erase phones or get car play to work. They said probably the APIM but didn’t recommend replacing it due to the cost (quoted $1200) and not being sure it would work (they said 85% sure). Kind of a more personal question - but would you replace it if it was your car, or just move on? Bluetooth and sync USB calling and music work fine, just can’t do CarPlay and don’t have navigation. And if so, would you do it yourself? I’m not experienced with working on cars.
Since you are NA based, you could get in touch with https://naviupgrade.com/ (he’s a forum member as well) for a replacement, or just look around at junkyards … ebay is also a possibility, but there are a lot of fake ones there, so be careful… You could get a new one, but I think that’s overkill.
About the work itself, it’s not hard. Are you good with your hands?.
As previously said, you “just” need to unmount some plastics and the unit itself, it’s almost plug&play.
You should also get forsca and an adapter to re-program the new APIM with your vehicle’s specifics.
Would I do the job myself?, it depends…
I hardly use Sync3 as an OS anymore, I have a wireless android auto dongle so I only see 10-15 seconds of the Sync3 screen before Android Auto kicks in… I use Sync3 for radio from time to time, but that’s about that…
From the task it self of changing it, yeah, I would do it myself if I can save some money and it’s not a nightmare to unmount it… But I’m good with my hands…
