Confusion regarding MY20 upgrade options

The below message is posted on the manual tutorial:
WARNING!
THIS WILL NOT WORK ON CARS MANUFACTURED ON OR AFTER 2020 (MY20), IT WILL “BRICK” YOUR UNIT.

You can use Syn3 Updater v2.6+ to update MY20 APIM’s without reformatting

When using the app and running the interrogator it says I have a MY20 APIM and that I can’t upgrade from 3.0.
Current SYNC version is 3.0.17302
Main objective for upgrade is to resolve Apple Carplay GPS speed discrepancy when using Waze. Would be nice to have updated maps if possible as well due to speed changes from existing version showing old data on heads up display.

Any advice available is greatly appreciated.

Does Waze show the correct speed when you use it just on your phone and not connected to the car?

Does Google Maps show the correct speed?

  1. This could be an app issue and have nothing to do with Sync, its not the first Waze speed issue I’ve heard of on various manufacturers cars.

  2. The final release of 3.0.x is 3.0.23219, it was a back end level up of 3.4.23188

  3. Is your car on the final release showing when you check on the Ford owner site?

  4. MY2020 hardware is a generic term for a hardware change Ford started beginning in 2019, the model year of the car doesn’t guarantee you do or don’t have the revised hardware (replacement APIMs shipped to dealers for models going back to 2017 can have this, just like the other side of the coin some MY2020 Escapes, Fusions & F150/250(s) have the older hardware from the factory).

Post the Interrogator XML.
Keep in mind you will need to adjust the screen size after the upgrade to Sync 3.4 due to the 10 inch screen if so equipped. You will need FORScan and an OBD adapter to accomplish this.
If you choose to stay with Sync 3.0, the latest version for your vehicle is 3.0.23220. DO NOT use Sync version 3.0.23219 or you will need to adjust the screen as above.

It does have the 10” screen and I do have access to Forscan. Is there specific options I need to select for either of these methods, stay on 3.0 but latest update or going all the way to 3.4? I completed the 3.4 update on my 16 Navigator before it got totaled and completed it on my mothers 17 Explorer but both were not MY20 APIM. That is the part I’m having the most problem understanding. Seems from the wording there might be an option I’m missing that does an upgrade in place without a reformat. I appreciate any guidance possible.

Waze does show the correct speed on both my phone and the wife’s when not connected. Both iOS 18 & 26.

I have honestly not tried Google maps when connected to Carplay.

I believe this is a SYNC issue as I had seen it after upgrading SYNC 2.x in my 16 Navigator to Sync 3.x (don’t remember the exact version any longer and don’t have the old files). I fixed it previously by getting that upgraded to 3.4.x.

It appears to be on the latest based on the VIN at Lincoln when checking for updates minus buying the new maps.

I think that answers all the questions. I’m just lost on the wording around possible options if its a MY20 APIM as I’m trying to avoid bricking it (wife will have a field day as its her daily).

Doesn’t look like a MY20+ APIM, but the Interrogator can’t read the APIM data. Try running the Interrogator Utility with the -AC or -AB file.
