EU maps replaced by US maps

Hi. I bought a new MACH 1 in Spain. I have Sync 3.4 build 21194. Navigation was working fine with EU maps. Then I downloaded a Sync 3 update from Ford - Sync3 Map Update
by using the VIN of my car.

Installation went fine, but after the update, EU maps have disappeared, but I have USA maps instead.

So I create an EU maps package with Syn3Updater, set the region to Europe, installed it, and the installation went fine again. But still, I can find US locations in the navigator, but for Spain I do not see any streets and get an empty navigation map. Any ideas how to restore proper EU navigation maps?

Just to confirm, you saw the green screen right?
Did tou master reset?

I got the “Installation Complete” screen but I did not get the green screen.

I did not do a master reset.

Does the Sync unit actually still work?
From what you say, it sounds like this second installation did not work. During the installation, did you see the Mustang screens with the car and horse logo? Followed by the green completion screen?

It’s important that you take a break and re assess things. If what you are telling us is true, you are trying to reformat a MY20/+ model, which will brick the unit.

So before doing anything else, you need to confirm some things first.

I did a maps only update with syn3updater, and followed exactly the instructions. Firstly I did the recommended my20 check and uploaded the xml log file.

I got the Installation Complete screen but I didn’t get the green screen.

The unit still works as before, still with empty EU maps.

I didn’t do any master reset, yet.

Do you still have the log produced by the interrogator log? If so, please post it (redact your vin if you cate about that)

Run the APIM Interrogator Utility again and post the results as mentioned by @SaNdMaN , please.

Thanks. I’m currently on vacation, I’ll do so in a couple of days

Here is the interrogator log, I took it today. Thanks for any help or advice!

Well… that makes no sense… :joy:

The log tell the unit has both EU an NA maps installed, and the unit is clearly EU.
Also, does not reference the type of APIM directly (to see if it’s MY20/+ or not)

Installed Packages
All these are EU maps:
1U5T-14G421-BAH
1U5T-14G421-BBH
1U5T-14G421-BCH
1U5T-14G421-BDH
1U5T-14G421-BEH
1U5T-14G421-BFH
1U5T-14G421-BGH
1U5T-14G421-BHH
1U5T-14G421-BJH

Misc:
5U5T-14G391-AP
4U5T-14G421-CED
1U5T-14G424-BK
4U5T-14G422-BBF
4U5T-14G422-BCF
4U5T-14G423-AC
1U5T-14G658-AG

These are all NA maps:
4U5T-14G421-CAD
4U5T-14G421-CBD
4U5T-14G421-CCD
4U5T-14G421-CDD
4U5T-14G421-CFD
4U5T-14G421-CGD
4U5T-14G421-CHD
4U5T-14G421-CJD

There’s no way to remove the NA maps without reformatting.
But I’m now confused about what you did. You previously provided a downgrade+reformat log, which we all assumed worked for you.

But later you said:

So that seems to be an auto-install, no reformat.

At the moment your unit seems to have both EU and NA maps with 14gb to spare, which I do not think it’s possible due to storage constrains.

Wait for someone else to jump in and take a look, but this is quite odd.
If you already autoinstalled EU maps and didn’t make a difference after a master reset, then I’m not sure what our options are.

Also, you mentioned this is a new car, so it’s under warranty, right?.
Before messing with it further, I would try calling the dealer. If this all started with an USB provided by Ford, they should fix this.

Hi. I described step by step what I did, see my original post at the head of this thread.

In summary, I installed an official Sync3 maps update from Ford web site (not with Syn3Updater). This somehow wiped out my EU maps and all of a sudden I had USA maps.

Then I did a maps-only update with Syn3Updater, in the hope this would bring back the EU maps. I did not get the green reformatting screen. I did not do any master reset. Before doing the Syn3Updater, I did the MY20 check as suggested by the Syn3Updater.

The unit still works, but in the navigator I still cannot see any EU locations and I cannot see any EU streets or cities. However, I can see USA locations and streets.

So far, Syn3updater did not worsen the situation, but at the same time, it did not get me back to the EU maps displaying.

When I bought the car, EU maps were working fine. It’s the official Ford Sync3 update that screwed up the maps.

Your VIN is a NA vehicle, and you used the US Ford Nav upgrade site to obtain the upgrade, which is for NA maps. There is no upgrade path for EU maps for your vehicle from Ford. This worked the way it should have, as designed.

This kind of worked for you, but should NOT have worked at all with the imported Mach1 from NA. You now have both sets of maps and voice on the unit, although fragmented, with an EU license for maps. In short, it’s amazing that the NAV works.

So how is this possible? It’s simple. Looking at the log file you can see that the APIM storage size is 64GB and the Engineering part number is 1U5T-14G371-EE (probably model 4U5T-14G371-xxx). Also, the country code is 455A which is the CZECH REPUBLIC. So, we know for sure this is not the original equipment in the vehicle but is a replacement for the import. This is not done by Ford, but probably by the importer.

You should change the country code to Spain. (5350)

The above said, this looks like it is a MY18.5+ APIM and can probably be reformatted to fix the issue you have now. If at all possible, you will need to look at the sticker on the APIM unit itself to be sure, since the Interrogator file did not populate the info properly. You could try the -AC version of the Interrogator file to see if the info will populate.

You can reference this tutorial for the instructions for the reformat if you choose to do so, just the Installation Instructions section. Normally, this would be the method you would have to follow to install EU maps on this vehicle, but since the APIM was swapped with a 64GB model, you have the available storage space to install a complete EU maps installation.

You sent us a log in that message that was a downgrade → reformat USB, so of course we all though you ran that because you hinted that.
That’s why I asked for confirmation, because it was not clear from the beginning.

F150chief already said what needs to be done, not sure how “new” car really is, since it seems the one that sold it to you did something to it, as it’s not Stock anymore.

What’s really odd about this is that as F150chief said, your VIN is for NA. NA APIMS are 32 GB, not 64GB. And yet, your unit seems to be a 64GB APIM. So I think you should ask your dealer for more information about what’s been done to the car.
If he can confirm which APIM installed, it would be good information since it seems that value can’t be pulled with the interrogator log for some reason.

Having said that, after changing that value NAV should start working again.
You won’t be able to delete the NA maps unless a reformat is performed against the unit.

Thanks a lot for your analysis and explanations, much appreciated and this hives me some hope. One question, how do I change the country code to Spain?

You will need FORScan and a proper OBD adapter.
Docs - CyanLabs Official Community

5350 corresponds to “SP”, but I think the country code in my case should rather be 4553 (ES for España). According to Region And Language for APIM and IPC - FORScan forum

Actually, I bought the car at an official Ford garage in Spain. I believe they just made a mistake with the country code (EZ->ES, 455A->4553).

You are probably right; I would go with that. You could ask them to change that for you.

Hi. I tried the AC version of the interrogator, here is the log. Does this reveal whether my APIM can be safely formatted?
