Failed to upgrade the APIM software (2013 Ford Edge)

I just tried and failed to upgrade the APIM firmware (2013 Ford Edge), and now have a black screen.
It was running Sync 3.4 build 20021 with chinese maps.
I was trying to update it to the last version with south america maps and I have only a black screen…
Does anyone can help me?

You meant updating the software…? Can you run the APIM Interrogator Tool and post the results? This will be in the Syn3 Updater app under the troubleshooting section. Since a 2013 Edge did not come with Sync 3, we need to know what APIM was installed to help.

Yes, I have installed a Sync 3 APIM and it was running ok version 3.4.20021 with chinese maps. I tried to run the apim interrogator but after the black screen the usb port doesnt work either. It happened after an attempt to upgrade the software to version 3.4 21194 with south america maps.

Sounds like you have a Chinese clone apim

Even if it’s not a clone, what you are describing is a typical MY20 issue with reformat (the method you used). So I wonder if you bought a MY20/+ APIM that came with 3.4 already…

Sadly, that’s an L series APIM, which is MY20.
It came with the screen as well, right?. So screen should also be MY20.

The leaked reformat tool is not compatible with MY20 units since it lacks MY20 or later screen drivers. If you reformat a MY20 or later unit, it bricks them due to this.

Which is exactly what I thought…new APIM in an older vehicle.

This is a possible fix…
Sync 3.4 Black Screen.txt (753 Bytes)

Once you are able to get a screen working, reformat the unit or finish the installation, then you can put the other screen back in, or not.

@Willian_Costa , I’m setting an autoclosure for this issue since it’s now identified.
There’s no solution without hardware replacement (or at least, temporary replacement).

No, i bought only this apim (nav)… after installed it was working normally with my old sync 3 2018 screen.

Would it be possible to try this? I was thinking about make a copy of my current sync 3 software (that is working) in forscan and copy it to the problematic apim.

So, you have a MY20 APIM with a non-MY20 screen and it still got bricked (it seems).
Do you have forscan?, is the unit recognized?.
Does the unit do anything? (besides the black screen, of course).

Sandman, yes, I have forscan. The unit is recognized with a lot of dtcs. Besides the black screen.

I’m removing the autoclosure for the time being.

@F150Chief , what do you think about DTCs?
Any pointers?, would resetting the APIM via Forscan do any good?

The DTC’s are probably U2100 and U3000 series, which is invalid or incomplete configuration, because the apps, etc., are not installed. The unit should still be in boot mode if it has a black screen due to MY20+ issues.

Did you follow the instructions in the document? If it is screen drivers, it should bring it back.

Hey guys, It did not work, the apim is really bricked. Maybe I will have to buy an especific obd conector and a paid Forscan version to try to fix it. At this moment I will buy another apim. Thanks for your help.

Don’t buy an 'L" version (example: LU5T) or you will have the same issue. The ‘K’ series (example: KU5T) are the 2019 models, and proven to work well and compatible with the newer software. The ‘J’ series is also fine, but don’t go earlier than that. All you need is the APIM module, use you existing screen if it is from 2018. You may find other part designations: 4U5T and 5U5T for example.
3 is the same as J = 2018
4 is the same as K = 2019
5 is the same as L = 2020
6 is M = 2021

If you plan on changing firmware with FORScan, use the recommended OBDLink EX adapter. I do not know if reprogramming the firmware will fix the APIM.
