LIC_ERR01 when installing NA 2 24 maps (2015 F‑150, 3.4.23188, NA 2 22 currently)

I’m getting a LIC_ERR01 error when trying to install the latest NA 2 24 maps using Syn3 Updater. This is on a truck/APIM that previously updated to SYNC 3.4.23188 and NA 2 22 maps without any issues.

Vehicle / system details:
Vehicle: 2015 F‑150 (USA)
APIM: Replacement unit with factory navigation
Current SYNC version: 3.4.23188
Current map version: NA 2 22
Region in Syn3 Updater: NA
Navigation: True
Install mode: Auto‑Detect (autoinstall), not overridden
MY20 protection: Auto‑Detect
Release selected: “Only Update Maps – NA 2026‑02‑05 – 1770309504”
Build type: Maps‑only NA 2 24 package

Syn3 Updater completes successfully (“ALL FILES DOWNLOADED AND COPIED TO THE USB DRIVE SUCCESSFULLY!”) and the autoinstall.lst is generated as expected for an “Only Update Maps NA” install.
When I plug the USB into the truck (engine running, no other USB devices, Wi‑Fi off), the update starts but fails with LIC_ERR01 during the map update.
Because this same APIM has previously taken 3.4.23188 + NA 2 22 fine, I’m assuming this is either:
A license/key issue specific to NA 2 24, or I’m missing a required option/preset in Syn3 Updater for this new NA 2 24 package on an older (2015) US APIM that’s already on 3.4.23188.

Questions:
For my setup (2015 F‑150 US, replacement APIM with nav, 3.4.23188, NA 2 22 already installed), what is the recommended Syn3 Updater configuration to move to NA 2 24 maps?
Is a different “release” type, cut‑down option, or an additional license‑related file required to avoid LIC_ERR01 on this NA 2 24 maps‑only update?
If NA 2 24 is currently known to cause LIC_ERR01 in situations like this, is the recommendation to stay on NA 2 22 or to use a different method/package?

Why are you using a cut down map installation?, what’s the APIM model?.

In Syn3 Updater, where you enter the Generator key, clicking on the globe icon takes me to a web page for cut down maps and you select the parts of the map you want and then generate the key to enter. How would I install the full maps (not cut down)? I’m looking to do map update only, since i’m on 3.4.23188 already. On the setup page when selecting Map version, they are locked. I won’t know the APIM model until I get home and get it.

The NA2.24 maps are ESN locked, hence the reason for the license file error.

I might be missing something here but wouldn’t the OP be able to upload the NA2.24 maps through Cyanlabs being an earlier model sync3 unit considering he currently has NA 2.22 maps?

Obviously they are ESN locked for the 2020 + models or sync unit.

That’s fine, I know how cut down maps work, but that does not answer my question of why you are using them.

What you mentioned in the last part of your post is what’s wrong with your setup: latest NA maps are ESN are locked and can’t be autoinstalled, that’s the error you are getting. ESN locked maps require a license to be autoinstalled, and you bypass that requirement by reformatting the unit.

Which comes down to the same question I asked earlier: why are you using cutdown map versions?.

Take a look at Basic Usage - CyanLabs to perform a reformat install only after checking if your APIM is MY20 or not. (you can’t reformat My20 hardware with Syn3updater).

If this was from 3.0 to 3.4 and you used Syn3updater you reformatted the unit while doing it, so it’s not MY20 and can be reformatted again.

License is by Sync3 APIM ESN/VIN with a specific license tied to that APIM/VIN combination and that iteration of the maps.

Just like buying a year from Ford, then getting a copy of the new maps the following year it won’t work because of a license mismatch.

It why the APIM has to be reformated to load the NA maps, it bypasses the Sync3 license file check done by a normal install.

FMODs has a jailbreak tool which deletes the existing maps and the copies the new files in, last person I know of that went that route said it was close to a 4 hr ordeal.

Yes…I understand that but doesn’t that only apply to post MY20 only? Apparently the OP’s is an earlier version.

I have uploaded the last 3 map updates to the factory sync3 in my 2017 Escape via Cyanlabs and it states on the Syn3updater downloader that it is only ESN locked for MY2020 + versions.

I currently have ANZ 2.23 maps and version 3.4.23188 and am still awaiting release of ANZ 2.24 in Australia.

Again, I apologise to those with more wisdom re this as I am still learning here and may be missing something.

Is it that if you replace the sync3 unit with one with a different VIN it cannot be updated with maps via Syn3updater? Perhaps the previous map update NA2.22 was done with the unit in the original vehicle with the matching VIN?

Yes, that’s why I asked him why was he using a cutdown package (he’s still to answer that), he’s making this more complex than it actually is.

ESN lock has nothing to do with MY20 models other than they require a reformat to install them via Syn3updater, which you can’t do with Syn3updater for MY20 hardware. They require a reformat to bypass the license requirement for being ESN locked. If you have a license, they could be autoinstalled.
But the maps themselves are compatible with any car regardless the MY, the “limitation” is the installation method.

Syn3updater does not care about VINs, that’s something Ford cares care about. If you paid for map upgrades based on your VIN, Ford would push the update your way via normal channels. And if you paid for 3.0 maps Ford will not send you maps for 3.4 either, since to Ford’s eyes your car is still running 3.0, hence they will still try pushing upgrades for 3.0.

There’s a bit more to the map saga, depending on vehicle market they are in some cases free due to a national law (as in some EU countries) due to the map database (Here maps) using map data derived from public government sources.

Here in NA they’re a paid license, the only free was the NA2.20 release and this was largely due to Ford not actually offering map updates for previous years like they were supposed to (part of the abandonment of Sync apps, why offer a map update if people are expected to use Google maps etc), so the only solution if you had say a 2017 with the NA1.16 and wanted to update to NA1.18 the only way to do it was to get a newer APIM from say a 2019.

Then someone at Ford saw the light and realized a dollar was a dollar and that not updating would kill the demand for the in car NAV cash cow which in some trims was an $800 option item.

I apologize for making this complicated. I have a 2015 F150 that had SYNC 2 from the factory. When SYNC 3 came out I upgraded to that by replacing everything and using Forscan to configure it. In 2021 I had to replace the APIM. I’m not sure if it’s a MY20 or not. The reason I am trying to install cut down maps is because with that it will generate a key for an unlocked ESN NA2.24. I would prefer to not have cut down map package but I am assuming that’s my only option for an unlocked ESN. Is there another way?

Have you gone through the basic guide instructions?
Create, run and share the file produced by the interrogator log.

This is wrong, as explained in multiple posts in this thread. Cutdown maps have nothing to do with ESN lock.

Yep, by reading the instructions I’ve sent before.

Ok…thanks..

Understood SaNdMaN. I believe that I may have got it right this time. It is currently running and updating. Thank you for your assistance.

No worries, as long as the unit is not MY20, you can do whatever you want to it.
Make sure to master reset once you are done, tell us how it goes.

Update complete, master reset done. Phone re-paired and all is working as expected. Thanks again for the support on here.
