Ordered a SYNC 4 APIM, lets see what happens once it arrives!

If you put the VIN of a Sync 4 equipped vehicle in the Sync update site (Ford Owner) it will return the vehicle is either up to date or send you to instructions how to enable OTA updates, at least here in the US. I have tried with a variety of 2021 and 2022 vehicles, and the results have been consistent. The service departments, however, do have the ability to manually update Sync 4. There seems to be a new version of the Sync Universal USB Update Tool.

Currently my priority is seeing if its at all possible to get my TCU working. from what i understand it uses HS4 which i believe should be possible.

I believe you will need automotive Ethernet and a gateway module installed for external connectivity to work (cellular data/primary WiFi).

The gateway module routes communication between the TCU and SYNC via automotive Ethernet (acts sort of like a network switch).

The TCUs included with SYNC4 enabled vehicles from the factory include both onboard WiFi and cellular data. The TCU WiFi is considered primary and preferred over SYNC WiFi.

The SYNC 4 asbuilt sheet suggests otherwise

That’ll enable the HS4 network for basic comms but actual data flow (i.e anything that accesses the internet) occurs via Ethernet.

But this AsBuilt setting is combined with all the TCU stuff so i would suspect that means it’s to use HS4 TCU’s ? and therefore my HS4 TCU should work.

@avdonr, you are correct for 2021+ vehicles, but this is a retrofit, so the 2019 K series TCU would likely use HS4-CAN. If that does not work, the TCU will need to be downgraded to HS3-CAN to a J series firmware.

Right, yeah the HS4 TCU should work in a retrofit. Just not sure on how the new gateway module and SYNC hardware will interact with it without Ethernet. I can only really speak for “official” setups.

So my current TCU should in theory be HS4 so i am trying to make that work with SYNC 4 :slight_smile:

Since it’s automotive ethernet and only one wire pair is needed, just connect the APIM and TCU directly without the Gateway module? You don’t even need crossover cables like in the old days.

Don’t believe this configuration is possible. The gateway module acts as a sort of router and the software is written to establish VLANs in this manner.

Both SYNC and the TCU also only have 1 Ethernet port which would eliminate their ability to talk to other modules via Ethernet if they were directly wired together. By going through the gateway module, SYNC can not only talk to the TCU but it can also talk to other modules via Ethernet at the same time. First generation gateway modules have 5 Ethernet ports for various ECUs.

Of course you could always try directly wiring them together but network establishment likely won’t work from a software perspective.

I had my truck apart the other day(22 Super duty with Sync4) so I grabbed the part number off the ethernet cable that goes from APIM to Screen. IDK if this will help anyone but here it is

LVDS cable.
Low-voltage differential signaling , or LVDS, also known as TIA/EIA-644, is a technical standard that specifies electrical characteristics of a differential, serial signaling standard, but it is not a protocol. LVDS operates at low power and can run at very high speeds using inexpensive twisted-pair copper cables.

The Ethernet connector looks like a Rosenberger MTD connector but I’m not sure it actually is one.

I wasn’t thinking that far ahead, just hardware.
