I’m having the issue that seems to be prevalent among Sync users, specifically where the system sort of ‘soft resets’ every time I turn on the truck. Auto update message appears, radio resets to AM or SiriusXM channel 0, four preset pages shrinks down to two, etc. After doing a lot of research, I discovered this site and the subsequent tool. After running the interrogator log, it seems I have the common rwdata issue, where there isn’t any available space (currently showing 0 / 1.2G). I have run the rwdata cleaner tool twice and it hasn’t freed up the space, I’ve also tried the soft reset option where I hold the power and right seek button down to soft reset the system, and did that twice in a row. Rwdata still doesn’t have any free space. I can’t do a master reset as it gets hung up or frozen. I’m running the latest version, 3.4 build 23188. I’m at a loss on how to proceed, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
SYNC Region: NA
Navigation Variant: Nav
Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20
Install Type: OEM
Old SYNC Version: 3.4.23188
New SYNC Version: 3.4.23188
Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
I’m not getting any error messages.
Can you please try running an interrogator log against the unit and sharing the XML file with us? (redact the VIN from the file’s title an content if you care about that).
The reason I’m asking for that is to see what’s on the APIM, since rwdata partition getting full should not happen while running 3.4.23188.
From what I remember, what used to work was trying the SR → SR → MR combo multiple times.
Also, that’s a no-MY20 APIM, so it could be reformmated. Since the interrogator log runs, if the legacy methods do not work, you may consider trying to reformat the unit.
I want to make sure that I’m doing the reformat correctly. In the Syn3 Updater, I went into settings, turned on the ‘Edit Advanced Options’ button, selected ‘reformat’ from the drop down menu, and then clicked ‘Apply Settings’. Then, would I go back into the home menu, under new version select my region (USA) and version 3.4.23188? At the bottom it says Install Mode reformat. I just want to make sure this is the correct way to reformat the APIM so I don’t mess up my unit. Thanks in advance.
Look at the autoinstall file that is written to the USB and see if it is downgrading to Sync 3.3. That is required for reformat. In automatic mode it will downgrade and reformat automatically by selecting the map installation, you should not have to force a reformat.
This is what I’m seeing. Install mode still says autoinstall, it doesn’t say downgrade or reformat. Should I be selecting an older version in the New Version box? I apologize, the instructions I’ve seen on the site are unclear on the reformat process.
Okay, so here’s where I’m at now. After trying the downgrade (I selected 3.4.23188 and the latest map version 2.24 (2024)) I get the error code VER_ERRO8, which after doing a search on the site, seems to be the result of not having enough space in rwdata, which I cannot seem to clear, which I believe is the main problem I am having. Feels like I’m going in circles right now, any idea on what I can try next?
Did you follow the tutorial about the rwdata clearing procedure? try this, with the car running, 2 soft resets back to back and then a master reset. Do not turn off the vehicle, then try the reformat.
You could try 2 soft resets then insert the usb… might take a few times. There was another on the forum not too long ago that had to do about 3 or 4 soft resets before the usb would run.
I just tried doing multiple soft resets, then inserting the USB, still getting the VER_ERRO8 error. Is there a certain way I should be doing the soft resets? Should I wait for the system to completely load then reset it, or do the resets need to occur before the Ford logo disappears? Nothing I’m trying seems to work, I’m really at a loss, any input is greatly appreciated.
Always wait for a complete boot process including loading maps.
You can keep trying variations of this, but it looks like the unit just will not clear space. If you are adventurous you could disconnect the APIM from the vehicle, then reconnect and see if a soft reset would work. This is not a proven method but I have had it work on earlier models of APIM’s to clear the APIM. This one appears particularly stubborn.
Could you please post the interrogator xml file here…
