That hub will not work for CarPlay, if at all. You will likely need this one:
HU5Z-19A387-C (BLUE BACKLIGHTING) Ford (Wide 1 USB-A Port, w/Pass Through)
Yeah, I’m aware of that. So I’m looking for a SYNC 3 one. But at least, this hub has the same connectors as the newer one so I don’t need any harness for it and I can retain the front USB. I just removed mine and confirmed it has two mini USB connectors and this flat power connector with multiple pins but only two wires. So I just need a new hub and it should be plug’n’play.
Although I need it only for Android Auto (my AAWireless adapter is arriving tomorrow), which should work with this hub, I would love to get rid of the error message and have CarPlay enabled for the future owner, when I sell the car.
PS: I purchased the APIM and LCD. It’s in mint condition! They said it’s from a 2018 Kuga with small mileage which was in crash. And I found a friend with Forscan, OBD and knowledge to do the programming. Now I just need to source the GPS antenna and USB hub. I found a totaled Focus 2017 in ads, the owner is willing to sell the hub if it’s appropriate, I’m now waiting for him to take a picture of it.
In the meantime, I’m studying the instructions for update via Cyanlabs updater. I want to update it to the latest available version and install the newest Europe maps as soon as I install it.
So I installed the SYNC 3 today in my car. I’m still waiting for new USB hub but I got everything else so I started the installation.
First: it seems like I got a faulty GPS antenna. I’m getting “Navigation fault” but sometimes it works and I noticed that I can make it work by fiddling with the cable near the FAKRA connector. I will have to buy another one.
But the bigger problem is that I cannot get my rear view camera to work! It’s an OEM one that came with the car on SYNC 2. We’ve spend half a day today programming with Forscan and trying every single option we found there in the APIM but no luck, nothing happens when I put on reverse, the APIM doesn’t know that it’s in reverse.
I see that there are similar problems: 2015 Ford Focus Sync 1 to 3 Upgrade and 8" Screen Reverse Camera will not come on automatically - #14 by F150Chief
Is there any other module that I have to program (like ACM, BCM, IPC etc.) or is it all in APIM?
The system is currently on prahistoric v3.0 so tomorrow I will put Cyanlabs on it and update to the latest version (including maps). I hope that might fix the issue but I somehow doubt it.
Does anyone know what to do next? I’m willing to pay if needed to someone who can help me resolve it. It’s urgent as I need the car and I don’t want to assemble it back until I don’t solve all the issues.
Might need to perform a New Module Calibration for the camera, also asbuilt settings. The calibration is in the tools menu in FORScan.
Post your asbuilt.
I managed to update it to v3.4 with Cyanlabs updater, also got the F13 maps. I will get Forscan working now on my computer and post the AsBuilt here.
In the meantime, after update, the “Navigation fault” error is gone. It seems to be working fine. The thing is that, my car is parked in a covered parking and it seems that there’s no signal for GPS. Now with 3.4 version, the navi works but there’s a crossed GPS sign. As soon as I start driving, this disappears and the navi works. Is it possible that the old 3.0 version was giving the “Navigation fault” error because of bad signal? We never tested it outside of this covered parking. Maybe I don’t need to look for a new antenna after all. But I would love to know that before assembling the car back.
Also, the APIM gets hot like crazy. Is this normal?
The APIMs run hot.
No GPS signal inside of a covered parking structure would be expected.
GPS requires the system to be able to lock in on a minimum of 3 satellites in order to work, its a radio signal that’s meant for use where the receiver can see the sky.
ORIGINAL POST DELETED
I managed to fix the camera! It was a stupid tiny mistake: I somehow missed (or ignored) the “transmission type” configuration in the APIM, it was set to “Automatic”. By switching it to “Manual” I got the camera working.
I also managed to activate HVAC controls on the screen, and I changed the Bluetooth name from “Kuga” to “Focus”. And I put the ST splash screen (it’s a ST Line so close enough).
I purchased new GPS antenna and haven’t seen the error yet (nor any DTC related to it) so it seems to be working better.
Also tested Android Auto, Wireless Android Auto (with adapter) and voice commands and calls, everything works. ACM works flawlessly (CD, USB, FM, Bluetooth). I will assemble the car tomorrow.
Two more things are bugging me now:
- I have a small feeling like the camera picture is lower quality than before. Is it due to new screen having a bigger resolution or? Is there any setting that can affect this? I managed to look into the BCM config and I’ve found there the setting for “RVC connection type” which can be set to LIN or CAN. But I didn’t want to touch it since it works now.
- I want to get the IPC to show the turn instructions from navi. When I was activating my SYNC 2 navigation 8 years ago, I skipped that step because I didn’t want to write to IPC so I never had this enabled and working on SYNC 2. But I checked IPC config now and there are two options for this, and both are enabled but it doesn’t seem to work. I’ve found this article: https://www.focusst.org/threads/instrument-cluster-navigation-ipc-solved.161138/ so I guess I need to reprogram my BCM. Is that correct?
And of course, if you have any tips and tricks how to improve it, feel free to let me know! I tried to change some options randomly in APIM but nothing happened (eg. I enabled TPMS hoping that there will be an app to check tyre pressures but nope).
Here is my final APIM AsBuilt that I currently have:
Focus_FINAL_APIM_20250428_195336.abt (401 Bytes)
And here are my BCMii AsBuilt:
Focus_BCMii_20250428_200053.abt (322 Bytes)
And IPC AsBuilt:
Focus_IPC_20250428_195826.abt (1.1 KB)
Yes
Good catch.
BCM setting is working, leave it.
Probably right…
NAV repeater needs to be set to Current.
Default set to “03 - Extended ICP”, and it needs to be changed and set to “05 - Navigation ICP”. This should be the setting.
Touchscreen needs to be 8".
Good writeup by the author…
Be aware that 7D0-09-xx are only control enables, not adding functions to the vehicle. Your vehicle needs to have these features already installed.
Good job!
I owe you all big time, especially @F150Chief, without the help of this community, I wouldn’t be able to even start with the project! This is a great community, keep it that way! And I definitely owe you some beers
I few photos of finished work and work in progress:
PS. I noticed a few times, after I touched the IPC, that my ABS lamp started flashing and traction control lamp was on. After a few engines on/off, it disappeared and only then I saw some DTCs in IPC that it can’t communicate with the bus. I cleaned them and it worked fine, but the ABS flashing happened one more time today. Any idea what could be wrong and what to do?
And now I’m waiting for USB hub to arrive, although Android Auto (even the wireless one with the adapter) works flawlessly. Also I need to fix my Forscan to be able to access the BCM to enable IPC Navi info. It complains that I’m missing a second bootloader or something like that.
Really good work and glad to help! Looks like you’ve got several of the issues fixed. The BCM thing: You only need the secondary boot loader if you are updating firmware. If you need it, let me know what it is…
I fixed most of the things. Now I would eventually need to program the BCM to get the navi info on the small IPC screen. And I would like to enable the auto-lock feature after 20 km/h.
Here’s what I’m getting when I try to enter BCMii programming (central configuration):
The thingy with ABS module was actually my stupidity. As I kept trying the reverse gear when working on the camera, I would automatically press the brake together with the clutch. Since the car was off and hydraulics was off, the brakes run out of pressure. I noticed today that I can’t push the pedal anymore, but turning the engine on and pumping the brake solved the issue and the warning.
And I think I’m going to jailbreak it and play with Fmods. I saw a screenshot somewhere of various info displayed, such as tyre pressure and DPF load. I WANT THAT!
It’s the little things in life that will trip you up…
See your PM…
I fixed the rest I managed to get IPC navigation info, I enabled auto-lock feature on 10 km/h and I’ve jailbroken the SYNC and installed a few mods for now.
Thanks one more time for all the help!
