Sync 3.0 upgrade on suspected MY20

I have Mondeo 2017 with Sync 3.0 19205.
Since I’m the second owner I do not know full vehicle history or if any Sync related replacements have been done to the vehicle.
I do not see any reference to APIM/Sync changes in Ford DSR Digital Service Records.

After reading available documentation, following upgrade instructions and preparing for the upgrade procedure I created Interrogator Log USB and have loaded Interrogator Log into Syn3 Updater.
From the log my APIM is:
APIM Model: JR3T-14G371-FFB
which is identical model number to the one that was referenced in other topics here where it created black screen issues after upgrade.
In those threads it was concluded that this APIM model could indicate that it was produced in 2020+ and hence should not be reformatted.

Syn3 Updater 2.11.8.0, after loading interrogator log, is warning me:
"You have specified that you have a MY20 SYNC unit, You can not create a update USB to go from 3.0 or below to 3.4 while My20 Protection is enabled.
Please recheck your settings and if you need further assistance visit our forum…
DO NOT DISABLE MY20 PROTECTION IF YOU ARE UNSURE

OK"

At this time I’m not inclined to take it apart to see what is written on the back of devices unless necessary.

Other relevant information:
APIM is showing as 64GB model with 12GB free in fs/images partition (if I’m reading this correctly)

Questions:

  1. What would be the correct way to upgrade to latest Sync 3.4 and how much time would it require?
  2. Would the same procedure have to be followed on every update?
  3. What would be procedure for downgrading (if needed/wanted)?
  4. Is there enough free space to follow these procedures?

No error messages

Update Method: Official Ford

First of all, kudos to you for doing your homework. :+1:

Your APIM is in fact MY20 according to our records, it’s a replacement unit made by Ford, so it seems it got changed/serviced before you became an owner. If you ask me, there’s really no point in unmounting it, since all the cases we had with this part number, it was a MY20.

So here are my answers to your questions:

You can’t upgrade to 3.4 with that APIM, since a reformat is required (which you can’t do). If you want 3.4, you need a different NOT-MY20 APIM assembly

Not applicable to your current scenario but yes, upgrade procedure is the same if possible. But you can’t, since it’s a MY20 APIM.
Edit actually, the reformat is required only to go from 3.0 to 3.4.xxxx, once on 3.4.xxxx you could get away with autoinstall upgrades… so let me correct this answer: no, once you are on 3.4 you could avoid reformat to upgrade to latest sync3 builds… although reformat is recommended if possible since it’s faster and cleaner while installing maps.

Can’t go back to 3.0, you can go back to 3.3 though.

Yes, but you can’t upgrade due to MY20 hardware.

JR3T-14G371-FFB is a Ford Service Replacement APIM that uses the new eMMC and is considered MY20+.

DO NOT REFORMAT this unit.

My main motivation is to upgrade maps to latest version (which is F11 right now, I have F8).
Is that possible while keeping current 3.0 version (and avoiding the reformatting issue)?

And btw great work keeping this site running and having such a great documentation

Thanks.

Well, you are in luck after all!.

Check out this thread → Tutorial: Sync 3.0.20204 with 2022 EU 2.21 (F11) Map Installation

As you can see, it’s possible.

@SaNdMaN thanks.

@F150Chief can you please estimate how long would upgrading maps to F11 take on Sync 3.0. I think this is not listed in the 3.0 F11 maps update thread

About 90 minutes…maybe a bit less.

Short update, I checked Ford website at
https://www.ford.co.uk/support/sync-maps-updates
and it turns out I had available official updates for Sync 3.0 19205 → 3.0.20204 and, after that was completed and I submitted .xml file to Ford, maps update to latest official version (which turned out to be F10).

So today I completed official Ford updates for both Sync apps and maps (going from F8 to F10)
Sync apps update took ~10 minutes, while Maps update took 90 minutes (40 minutes for 1st part, then another 50 minutes after restart).
(Ford generated .lst file was using AutoInstall mode and not Reformat - no surprise there)

I plan to do the 2022 EU 2.21 F11 maps update according to forum tutorial post at another convenient time (~2h road trip) since Ford is not offering F11 official update.

Couple of questions:
Ford update procedure/documentation for Sync and Maps does not mention anything about having to do Master Reset after update.
And I do not see any slowdowns or other problems using Sync after all of the official updates.

  1. That being given, would Master reset still be recommended/needed after official updates?

  2. Would master reset be needed if only updating Maps F10->F11 using tutorial post (since this is only updating Maps and not Apps package)?

I highly recommend you perform a master reset to clear the installation caches and old logs from the unit. This is good practice. Ford does not mention this as it is not viewed as necessary. This applies to any updates you perform on the unit. It is a computer device…
