Sync3 Navigation not staying on course

1st issue - Sync3 Navigation not staying on course

The built-in Sync3 Navigation continually is going off course. I installed a Sync2 to Sync3 upgrade kit purchased from a Chinese eBay seller, and for the most part everyting else is working great. OEM Factory SYNC 2 to SYNC 3 3.4 Upgrade Carplay Kit Fit for Ford Sync3 1080p | eBay

This issue was present before using Syn3 Updater to update to get the latest maps.

2nd issue - Google Maps info showing incorrectly in secondary dash display

When using Google Maps on Android Auto, the secondary dashboard navigation distance and time is only showing “6554km” and “0h00m” for every trip.

Additionally, the distance until next turn is off by a huge amount (ex. showing 333mi. when should be closer to 3mi.), although this issue is present with the built-in Sync3 Nav as well.

I did use Syn3 Updater to obtain the latest maps version, but these issues were present before with the Sync3 3.4.23188 version that was installed in the upgrade kit.

You have 2 GPS antennas running right now. A 2015 would have the one above the IPC on the MS-Can and then you added one that goes to the APIM for your new Nav. Good chance your AB is getting conflicting info from both and it is running you off course. You probably need to disconnect the one over the IPC or make the AB change so it does not use the data from the old one.

Whoever you bought it from gave you bad AB values to put it. There is also a chance you got a cheap Chinese clone APIM and you will never get rid of the problem.

Thanks for your reply. I did install a GPS under the dash behined the speaker and connected it to the APIM. The APIM looks OEM as it stamped with FoMoCo (same as the Sync2 APIM it replaced). I have been able to connect the car to Forscan - do you know where those “AB” values need to be updated? Also, where is the GPS connection to the IPC that I need to disconnect? Noob here, sorry.

Run the Interrogator Utility and post the xml here…most likely erroneous asbuilt information.

I have two separate issues:

GPS for the Sync3 Nav going off course,
Google Maps - Android Auto information displayed in the secondary dashboard showing incorrect data.

I don’t mind them being combined but perhaps the title could be updated to “Navigation Issues”? The title is only referring to one of the two issues I have.

One is causing the other, it is just a by-product of the NAV issue.

As built does have errors, and it is likely just having the 2 GPS antennas connected is causing issues. Like @bill32399 stated above, disconnect the OEM antenna (GPSM). You do not need to remove it, just disconnect the cable to it.

Most of the parity values are ‘00’, so you will need to let FORScan calculate and write the correct values. Save the file once it does that.

Thank you. I will update those values in Forscan. Can you point me the the direction of where I can find the physical location where I disconnect the GPS. I am not familiar with the various components, other than what was necessary to do the Sync2 to Sync3 upgrade. Again noob here…

It is located above the IPC. You will need to pull out the IPC to get to it. The downside is that you will no longer have a direction indicator on the IPC since it looks for the signal on the MS-Can bus.

I will be honest though I have a 2015 and I have both connected with no issue, but I retrofitted an Explorer 2017 OEM Sharkfin antenna with an OEM splitter.

This is where I am stuck. I have loaded the file - am I just to wait until something happens before selecting “write all”? When I select write all, the values appear to revert back. How do I let FORScan calculate and write the correct values? Again thank you so much for your help!

First make sure you always save your current AB that is working so you can load them all back.

Second don’t worry about the last 2 digits. Those are just Checksum values and Forscan will correctly calculate those. You will always get that question if they are not already in right.

There were a few cases over on 2gfusions.net where folks with 2016s had issues doing a Sync3 conversion.
The solution there was to leave the GPSM connected and to replace the GWM with a USED one from a 2017.

His 2015 Explorer does not have a GWM though. CEGA 1.2 until 2016 when they added the GWM(CGEA 1.3) but still used the GPSM for that year only.

I know he can run both so it’s either a cheap Chinese Antenna causing the problem or and AB setting.

I tried it again this morning, and it looked like it worked! The Sync3 Nav appears to be functioning as expected now (Yes!). Thank you @F150Chief & @bill32399 for your assistance with this!

I do still have my second issue where “6554km” and “0h00m” show on the dash display for every trip when using Google Maps remaining.

I have attached the log in case you can see anything else that may need to be adjusted to fix that issue. Should I create a separate post for this remainig issue?

Curious why you using KPH if you’re in the US? Or are you in Canada?

Yeah, it is strange because everything else is in miles/MPH. I don’t see anything set to kilometers/KPH. I am in the US.

The way you’re describing it that sounds like the IPC setting. Should be in your manual for that one. Is it the 1 screen(Type 1) or the 2 screen(Type 2) display?

Would it be the Type 2 display? It has an analogue speedometer with a digital display on either side - I posted a picture in the original post above.
