Upgrading Ford Mustang 2016 -- SYNC 3 from v2.2 to v3.4

Hi!

I’m preparing for upgrade and I’d like to confirm the plan. I owe Mustang 2016, it has SYNC 3 with firmware version 2.2.

  1. Hardware:
Do I need to upgrade the USB hub?
    This one Amazon.com ?
    Any other hardware changes?
Should I replace the USB hub first and then update my SYNC software?

  2. Given that I’m on v2.2 right now - do I need to update to v3.0 first and then to v3.4? Or do you recommend to update from v2.2 to v3.4 directly?

That’s it? Or do I miss anything?

Probably need to upgrade the hub. If you have a USB port in the armrest and the console, this is the right one.
No other HW changes should be needed.
You can replace it before or after. Depending on the build date, you might have a compatible hub, so waiting till after might be prudent.

Go directly to 3.4.

To find out if you have Nav or other parameters of the Sync unit (APIM), you can run the Interrogator Utility in the Syn3 Updater and post the xml file here.

Yes, I do have those 2 USB ports!

Amazing, thank you!

By the way…shop for the hub, the Amazon price is way too much. You should be able to find one for about $60 - $70. Make sure it is OEM, buy it from a Ford dealer or outlet if you can. There is a plight of fakes out there.

99% of the Amazon ones are cheap Chinese garbage ones also.

Thanks guys! Not buying the USB hub from amazon, and not buying it at all since F150Chief suggested I shouldn’t need it.

One more question: What’s the best way to make a wireless CarPlay (for iPhone)?
I ordered this Wireless CarPlay Adapter Amazon.com – is it ok?

Hello.

Before you upgrade make sure Car Play / Android Auto works on your current build. Once you ensure those work, you can directly upgrade to 3.4.

About wireless CP, there are a lot of adapters in the market. I do not use CP but Android Auto, and I got one from Motorola. They work and get the job done, I do not know the one you sent in the link. Ensure there’s a good return policy should something go wrong with it.

But again, ensure wired CP works before moving forward (and that includes buying a wireless adapter).

Only AndroidAuto works. And when I bought my car neither worked: AndroidAuto started working after a software update a few years ago. The whole reason I’m doing all these is because I hope I’ll get CarPlay working with v2.2 → v3.4 update – am I right?

Yes. And I stated that you might have a compatible hub now, but to wait till you upgraded to see.

The wireless adapter you ordered is one of the better ones, you should not have any issues. One thing they do not tell you is that you should make sure CP works with a wire before connecting that device. Some of them don’t emulate very well.

I would ensure CP works before upgrading to 3.4, that’s why I said what I said before. CP should be working already if you have the correct build, hub and cable.

You can try installing 2.2.17011, check this post → 2016 Mustang Sync3 1.0 updated to 3.0 and no Apple Carplay! - #10 by SaNdMaN (nevermind this, I saw you are already on that build)

If with that CP does not work, make sure to use a certified cable since Android Auto is more forgiving.

Again, my recommendation is to make sure CP works before upgrading to 3.4.

Guys, which Map Version should I select here? I currently have build-in maps.

@SaNdMaN , can you please recommend a certified cable for iPhone for CarPlay? It should be USB-A to USB-C then?

Unfortunately I do not, I’m not a CP user. The only time I used CP was for testing if it worked, and I used the cable that came with the phone.

No point is using an older map so 2.24 is the way to go. As far as a cable, Ford recommends using Genuine apple cables for CP.

Did you get this all figured out and done?
Did the wireles CP adapter work ok?
