2018 Navigator Black screened updating 3.0.22326 to 3.4.23188

Shortly after connecting the install USB, there was a message saying something like “Update complete, remove USB, update will continue…”. The message went away and the screen went black. I removed the USB and screen has not come back on since. I can access the APIM thru FORScan and can read AB and configurations. I can reboot the module but it does fail selftest almost immediately.

Will do but I’m not seeing activity on the flash drive when it’s connected to the Navigator. I have a new 256 GB SanDisk USG 3.0 I will use and see if that helps. I’ll follow up and let you know. Thank you!!

Run the update again with the new USB. If it does not work, does the screen stay black or does it show the Mustang, horse and Ford logos?

DO NOT remove the USB until you see a solid green screen when reformatting the APIM.

Did you check the APIM to see if it is MY20+ or not using the Interrogator Utility before you reformatted it?

I did not run the interrogator utility on the first pass but did select it on when creating the install on the new usb. However, it did not appear to run when I plugged it in to the Navigator a few moments ago. I left it connected for for a couple on minutes but did not see any activity on the USB drive. Likewise, I deslected the interrogator and restart the build on the new usb. I have a hunch I bricked. it and will need to replace the APIM.

You didn’t misunderstood, it should as long as you ran the interrogator log and have it processed by Syn3updater in order to determine so…

Now, we have a problem with that P/N: Would you be able to get physical access to the unit?, it would be important to get the information on its back.

APIM model JL7T-14G371-KGB is not listed in our HW DB, but based on the naming convention, it’s very likely to be MY20.

It is MY20+. The unit is likely bricked.

I should be able to pull it and get some pics in an hour or so. I have not actually pulled the APIM before but from what I’ve seen in the workshop manual, I need to remove some trim pieces, the ACM and then should be able to pull the APIM module.

Actually, there’s no need…
I was doing some research and I’ve found a single thread from 2 years ago in which your APIM model is named → 2019 Navigator Sync 3 update BLACK SCREEN! .

Based on the naming convention, I was about to add a mask so that Syn3updater would detect it as MY20, but I got an error… Guess which error: the value was not unique…

So the mask I was about to add to prevent this was already in place, and Syn3updater detects that very same model as MY20 because of such mask:

So it seems that somehow you bypassed the MY20 detection…

Since you have reformatted a MY20 unit, your options are limited:

Just a thought, since you are NA based: should you decide that someone else could recover it, consider contacting Naviupgrade → Bricked Sync 3 APIM Module Unbricking Service – NaviUpgrade . To be 100% transparent with you: as far as I know, he does what’s described in the GitHub page I’ve sent as 1st option. So you can do that as well, as long as you have the knowledge and access to the unit.

He’s also a forum member, although he’s not been that active lately, I’m sure you have seen some videos of him and Sync3 stuff.

That’s up to you, I’ve extended the auto closure for the thread so you will have the option to…

For future reference: if you need to reformat the unit again in the future, you will need to jailbreak it and use FMODS’ universal reformat package, you can’t reformat it with Syn3updater.
