Back screen after update to v.3.4.23188

Hi team
I tried to update my Ford Fiesta 2018 to Sync v.3.4.23188 (from 2.3.17109) this afternoon. The downloading worked fine on the usb, connected it to the car while the engine was on. The updating progress seemed to be working fine but then… I had a black screen with the radio on. The radio music plays (volume up and down work fine, but not the other) and the USB plug also works.
I tried to reboot the screen several time but nothing happens… I am quite desperate… Hoping to receive some help!

Did you run the Interrogator Tool first to determine if your APIM (Sync) unit was MY20+? If so, what was the result?

Hello.

Can you elaborate on this?. What did you see?.
Provide as many details as possible.

Also, do you have Forscan and an adapter?.

Hi, not I have not. The car is from 2017

Hi, I plugged the usb drive, got the “work in progress” on the screen, then “update complete”.
I stopped the engine, removed the usb drive, locked the car, waited 1 mn or so, got back in, ran the engine again and plugged the usb in… but had the black screen with the radio still on…
Did I miss something ?
Any way I could recover from this?
Unfortunately I do not have Forscan…

The APIM could have been replaced with a Ford Service Replacement APIM which would likely be a MY20+ firmware unit. If it is, the unit is bricked. The only way to tell now is to find the part number of the APIM installed in the vehicle and manufactured date.

Thanks for your reply.
This is hardly possible: we bought the car in Sept. 2019 and never had any issue with it. I don’t see how it could have an MY20…

has the theme been changed via forscan before?

MY2020 hardware went into production in early 2019 for the 2020 model year.
Some dealer replacement APIMs are MY2020 hardware even though the car is an older year and they have Sync 3.0 loaded on them.

Another possibility is that the screen was replaced with a newer model screen, the side frame of the one you have should be a G series (eg GS7T18B955SB), I have seen cases where an older APIM that had the screen replaced with a 2019+ screen (eg KS7T18B955SA) had issues after the reformat reboot.
ForScan will show an error for incompatible hardware if this is the case. If you’ve got this, the fix is to connect a G series so that it completes a reboot with a compatible screen, after that you can put the K series back.

Thanks for your suggestion.
To be clear, I had Sync3 with a v 2.3.17109 installed.
To be fair, I don’t really get your 2nd option with the “F” and “K” series… is that a different version of software or a different look of the screen (“side frame” you called it).
Thanks in advance for the clarification

Nope, never seen any change

The difference in the G and the K series is the circuit board inside, the actual screen & digitizer are the same.

Hello.

¿Why would you interrupt the process like that?.

So, you never saw a mustang screen, or a green, red screen, nothing like that… Normal Sync3 screen with the update message at the top, then it rebooted to a black screen, but the unit is operational…

Right?

Thanks Warlock
So I would need to uninstall the screen and the unit to access the serial number…
FYI, Karine et David called my Ford agent, telling them I had a black screen while trying to update Sync3 (not going into the details with them…)
Anyway, he did ask if we faced battery issues recently… the answer is YES, the car failed to start the engine several times during the last 2/3 months. The guy told me that the screen can also go black to reduce electricity consumption in favour of the ignition process… and the screen goes black.
So 1st thing is probably to change our car battery and we’ll see from here…
I’ll keep you posted

:warning:
Guys, this does not seem to be a MY20 reformat issue :backhand_index_pointing_down:

So, as far as that says, the unit is operational but displaying a black screen.

Lets wait for confirmation it he saw the reformat phase screens or not…

Hi folks
So here is my latest update:
The car battery was changed on Wdenesday… the screen remained black with the radio on but out of tune as the radio had been reset.
This morning I tried to update to v3.4 but nothing happened…
I connected to the Ford website and noticed that it said that I had the latest version on Sync installed (3.0.23219)!
So I am a bit lost to be fair… It seems that the Ford installation process worked last Sunday.
I tried it before going to your solution but the message was “still in progress” and could not finish…

This morning I tried to update the Ford v3.0 I had dowloaded previous but the screen remained black…
I’ll see with Ford what they think, explaining that I installed the latest official version for their website but ended up with the black screen…
Unless you have any better idea!
(ps: I am not too warm checking the APIM version, removing the screen from the dashboard…)

It would be a nice thing to answer stuff…

Absolutely right SaNdMaN!

When started, does the unit show anything?, a splash screen maybe?.
Does your car have a backup camera?, does it work?.

Hi
No, it shows nothing, just pure black…
No backup camera on mine. When you go reverse, there should be a screen showing how far you are from obstacles… but nothing shows neither…
