Permanent Black Screen on Sync 3 after update attempt from 3.4.23088 to 3.4.23188

I have a new to me 2015 Ford F250 that previous owner had installed a sync 3 APIM at some point (original factory unit would have been Sync2). I do not know if it was OEM or Chinese knockoff. I noticed that the clock on Sync screen was showing oddball time and every time I attempted to manually change it then it would immediatly revert back being odd time. Also on navigation GPS was showing with red circle and cross through it which I figured was probably related to clock issue. I decided to upgrade the software from 3.4.23088 to 3.4.23188 to see if it would fix the issue. I used a 32GB flash drive and went through the auto upgrade sync tool wizard. I ran the interrogation utility and it showed as being prior to MY20. I also checked the model number on the Sync diag screen and it showed as being HP5T-14G380-BA series (2017 year according to my research). I did not physically check the back of the unit to confirm these. I inserted the flash drive into the USB A slot (my hub has USB A and C) and it showed ‘update in progress’. I read the CyanLabs update doc prior and it said the first step would take 5-15 minutes. I stepped away about for 5-10 minutes then checked back on it. Only black screen was showing up now and I didn’t see any type of restart prompt on the screen, but maybe it auto restarted prior to me seeing it? I’ve tried removing negative car battery cable for 30 minutes, pulling Sync fuse overnight, and reset (power button + fwd for 10 seconds). Screen stays black. I do see the USB hub lights go off/on during the 10 second soft reset, but thats it. I’ve plugged my USB flash drive back into USB hub and the flash drive just does a constant slow flash on/off. Only logs I see on the flash drive were from when I formatted it, nothing dated during the time of update attempt.

Does the unit exhibit any sign of life?, audio?, BT?, backup camera if the car has one?.

Thanks for the response. No backup camera or audio shows up. The only ‘sorta’ life is shows is the usb hub lights are on and will go off/on during soft reset. Screen doesn’t even seem to show any backlighting at all. No beeps when touching screen and no sound when pressing cd eject button.

This DTC error does show up in forscan even though the Apim ‘on-demand self test’ doesn’t come back with any errors.

Looks like you’ve got a K series screen connected to an older APIM instead of a G series, the first boot after the reformat is trying to load the wrong screen drivers.

If you connect a G series screen the APIM will load the correct video drivers and you’ll be up, after that you can put back the K series until the next reformat.

Thank you for the info. Three follow up questions that come to mind from it that I’m curious about.

You’d mentioned that I have a ‘G’ series APIM. Is that being found by the 3rd letter in the second octet of the H/W Part Number HP5T-14”G”380-BA? My thought was the first letter “H” in this case was the generation.
Where do you see the K mentioned for the screen version?
Is there a way I can add the K driver package to the existing flash drive and have the update process start over using the new K drivers? Mainly trying to avoid having to buy an older screen just to get things back online.

I didn’t say APIM, I said screen.

They’re 2 seperate parts.

The G series used a different driver board from the K series, externally they’re identical with a different part number on the side, there no difference in the actual LCD/digitizer.

So, vehicles like the 2016-2019 Escape used G series screens entirely since that model year combination stayed on Sync 3.0.

The 2017-2018 Fusion came with G series, while the 2019-2020 came with K series as those 2 years had native Sync 3.4 hardware.

I agree, double check the screen’s model. I do not know how to validate if it’s MY20 or not, but share it and maybe someone else will be able to.

I pulled the unit apart. Pics are attached with third one being back of screen case. I don’t see any significant markings on the back or side of screen that show a model type though. Maybe I need to completely remove the case to view the motherboard? Hopefully someone has been there done that on what I need to be looking at. For what it’s worth the APIM shows as a J model with mid 2019 build date.

Are the counterfeit Apims known for having issues with GPS being disabled? Makes me wonder if my initial problem that prompted the software upgrade attempt might be related to the poor quality hardware components.

I think that is one off the new high resolution screens. @F150Chief got one and knows more about them. It is clearly not the stock one though as the plug would be on the end and not the middle.

If I remember correctly you need a K series APIM or better to run it. I am not 100% sure your APIM is legit though. I belive it is a fake also. This is probally gonna be a big uphill battle to get these working togather right.

Ok. The history of them working is bit of an unknown to me. The head unit and screen were useable when I first got it but just couldn’t use gps or have the clock correct due to the gps issue. I’m going to test with an older screen in a few days as suggested by others to at least see if the Apim is still working and will update correctly to at least start sorting out best path forward.
