Sync 1 to Sync 3 upgrade problem

Thank you so much!

I’ve now got everthing in except the brackets to mount the screen and APIM in my truck. I went ahead and plugged everything in and uploaded the APIM as built for the other 2016 XL and I lost the navigation. I turned it back on with ForScan but not sure if I selected the correct one. I can tell I also have some other things that may not be working correctly, but waiting until I update to the newest maps and sync with the updater tool. Before I start, I tried to input my APIM into the update tool to check and make sure it’s good to go and it acts like I have entered an incorrect APIM number. KS7T-14G370-BCH. Just wanting to make sure its good before I start the update.

KS7T-14G370-BCH is 32GB nav. OK to reformat, no issues there. Looks like your ok on firmware, but when you get a chance get all the details from FORScan and post them here. There are a few asbuilt coding entries that can be improved on the APIM.

Here is my current asbuilt from the APIM. I don’t currently have the FCIM connected due to waiting on parts, but having a few of the same issues I had with the chinese APIM. When I go through the sources, it will only go through once and stop and when I try to make a call through SYNC, it still will play the radio, or its silence and the person can’t hear me and I can’t hear them.

I’ll take a look tomorrow…

Thank you and I’m wondering if maybe my harness might be the issue since I’m having the same problem. Amazon.com: PNP Conversion Power Harness Plastic Metal HC3Z?19A387?B 4in to 8in for System SYNC 1 to SYNC 3 System for MKX MKZ MKT MKC : Electronics I ordered this harness from Amazon. I have since found this one. 4" to 8" Plug 'n Play Conversion Harness for Sync 3 – Hellhorse PerformanceĀ®
This harness doesn’t have the ACM or FCIM connections like most of the others I have seen. Are they even necessary?

Attached is a revised APIM asbuilt for you…

List of questions:
Did you change your ACM, if so, to what?
Do you have SDARS? (XM)
HD Radio?

Attached is maybe a closer example vehicle to yours. Might help with the other components.

If you copy the ab file above and change the extension from AB to XML you can drag it into your browser window and read it. Near the bottom will be the component part numbers, like for the FCIM, and the asbuilt in the file.

Maybe @bill32399 can answer the harness question?

I am lucky to have the talent to be able to solder and either make my own harness or be able to tap into the wires I need. I believe they are way over priced but I get not everyone can make their own.

We also have had a handful of examples where people have had problems with the harnesses they got. If you got deep pockets than go for buying one but just know that AB will not fix a wiring issue. Make sure to only buy from a US based maker in case you have to return it.

  1. I did not change the ACM.
  2. I didn’t have XM, but I think my truck has the ability for XM.
  3. I didn’t have any HD radio that I’m aware of

Ok. Just out of curiosity though, must of the harnesses you find, you have to T into the ACM and FCIM. The one I found from Hellhorse Performance doesn’t have the ACM and FCIM T’s. Are they really needed to get everything to work?

That harness is for a Sync 3 4" to 8", not Sync 1 or 2 to Sync 3.

Yea the main reason for this is the 2 different Canbus’s it is tapping. The ACM runs on the Ican/HS3 and the APIM is can be on 3 different ones. They are just covering all their bases so it’s greater compatibility you might say.

Your ACM will not if it did not come that way. You can enable it all day and night but it will never work as the hardware will not be in it. Ford pays for the licensing of the chips and they will not pay for licensing for it on an ACM that they will never use it.

Easiest way is to look at the back of the ACM.
Black CoAx is AM/FM, mustard is XM.

So there should be two CoAx cables if it has XM?

Correct, XM is the mustard coax.
A few units (eg ones in the 2017/2018 Fusion) may also have a 3rd white cable, that’s a secondary AM/FM antenna feed.

OK, if you didn’t change the ACM it’s not a concern, just wanted to make sure the asbuilt was correct.

Just an update. I successfully updated to sync 3.4 and 2024 maps. I updated the asbuilt from @F150Chief and still having the issues with calling and source select. I received a couple new harnesses today to try and see if that helps. Hopefully will get to try them tomorrow. I will double check when I pull the ACM to see if I have XM , but I’m pretty sure I only had one COAX cable when I first disconnected everything.
