Sync 1 to Sync 3 upgrade problem

I just upgraded my 2016 crew cab from the 4.2 inch sync 1 to Sync 3 8 inch screen. Hooked everything up and have a few bugs. First are codes that are showing in forscan. I am getting a FCDIM error, unable to read DTC and an APIM UO159 code. Also when I switch media sources with the physical media buttons on the dash and steering wheel, it will cycle through the different sources until it gets to FM AST and then stops. Also when I try to make a call with sync with my phone connected via Bluetooth, the audio source will change from whatever it is, like usb, to the radio and I have no audio from the person I called and they can’t hear me. I’ve tried deleting my phone and also tried with my wife’s phone and have the exact same issue. I would greatly appreciate any help. I did purchase a sync 2 to 3 upgrade kit from eBay and bought my own wiring harness for sync 1 to 3 and a backup camera adapter and my own control panel.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
FCDIM error, unable to read DTC and an APIM UO159 code

Update Method: Official Ford

Could you post your current APIM asbuilt here…

What was the model/year of the FCDIM donor?
You may need to drop your AB into it.

Here is the asbuilt file

I don’t know what the donor vehicle is. I ordered and upgrade kit from eBay that was supposed to be programmed to my VIN.

I looked at the back of the APIM and the part # is 3U5T-14G371-DEE. Manufacture date of 06/12/2020. Also states assembled in China.

The manufacture date does not match the production series number for that APIM. The 3U5T is equivalent to JU5T, so a J-series APIM. But the manufacture date of 6/2020 would suggest either it is a Ford Service Replacement, which would be MY20+, or a cobbled together Chinese counterfeit with a fake sticker. Take a pic of the label and post it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT REFORMAT this APIM, at least yet!

Also, what model of F-150 do you have?

Update: About the APIM…Return it.

Here is a picture of the APIM and my truck is a 2016 F150 XL with FX4 package.

Yup, that’s a fake. I am not going to say how I know because those guys are on here and I don’t want them changing it to screw over more people.

The serial numbers are both PZ6C00M6. Clearly counterfeit.

So is there any hope for it working correctly or should I just return it and try to piece together my own kit?

It’s better to return that and source a decent one. I can offer some suggestions to help. That unit could operate properly but in our experience it will fail and/or have issues that you’ll never get fixed. It’s your call…

Ideally you’ll want to get a later J-series or K-series APIM. NAV or not is up to you. Don’t bother with L-series, you can’t reformat those with the Ford reformat tool, thus you can’t update maps, etc.

I would appreciate your suggestions and I think I will try and return it.

Just tell them it failed…
By the way…,I have an asbuilt for a 2016 F-150 XL so it will be very close to start with for the APIM.
Also, you replaced the FCDIM with an FCIM, most likely. Do you have the part number and pic of that?

eBay has a good return policy. If you have issues with the seller contact eBay support and they will likely get your money for you.

I am assuming this is the FCIM?

And I’m am unfamiliar with how to tell what series an APIM is from, is it the first letter of the part number?

Yes. We refer to those as production model years or series.

Yep.
FL3T-18E243-CBJ Heated rear window. Single zone, manual climate.
Good to go. That will need to be checked for proper programming, but we can get you thru that easy enough.

Thank you so much. I was looking at what I think would be H series APIM that is from a 2017 F150 on eBay, but I guess I shouldn’t consider that one then.

Also, just wanting your opinion, the kit I purchased came with the newer 2023 8.46 inch screen and brackets and I paid $350 for the kit which included the APIM, screen, brackets, USB hub, and gps antenna. Would you suspect the screen is also a counterfeit and wouldn’t last as well? The new screens I have found on eBay are around $300. I was just wondering because if the screen would be good, it would be worth it to just keep the kit I purchased and just get a different APIM. Again, than you so much for the help and advice.

The screen might be fine. There are a lot of kits now that upgrade the Sync 3 screen to the Sync 4 screen. Can you get a pic of the screen and P?N for it?

Might be a good move…

Thats an H series. I would avoid those. Try to get at least a J but K is the best.
