Two Step Installation for Sync 3.0 Versions (2.3 thru 3.0) from Sync 3.0 Early Versions (1.0 thru 2.1) Maintaining CarPlay

Two Step Installation for Sync 3.0 Versions (2.3 thru 3.0) from Sync 3.0 Early Versions (1.0 thru 2.1) Maintaining CarPlay.

NOTES:

  • This process does not use the reformat tool and is safe for MY20+ Service Replacement APIM’s.
  • This tutorial does NOT apply to upgrading to Sync 3.2+ as that process utilizes the reformat tool.
  • This tutorial is targeted for Ford and Lincoln vehicles originally equipped with Sync 3.0 with or without factory navigation. DO NOT attempt to place maps on a NON-NAV Sync APIM.
  • Run the APIM Interrogator Utility to determine the specifics of your Sync APIM installed in your vehicle. This can be done thru the Syn3 Updater or manually following the tutorial, Tutorial: APIM Interrogator Utility - CyanLabs.
  • It is recommended using a USB 3.0 drive with at least 32 GB of storage.
  • This installation may consist of multiple reboots, in which the vehicle ignition must remain on throughout the process. DO NOT REMOVE THE USB UNTIL THE ENTIRE PROCESS HAS COMPLETED.
  • A ‘Master Reset’ will be performed at the end of this procedure.
  • This procedure does NOT include installation of maps on NAV APIM’s. This is only the Sync app installations. Map installations require they be downloaded from Ford - Sync3 Map Update to obtain the map license as the maps are ESN locked for NA.

Overview

If you have updated your Sync 3.0 NA NAV or NON-NAV APIM to Sync 3.0.20204 (or recent Sync 3.0 version) and do not have Apple CarPlay, despite having upgraded the USB hub, it is likely due to an incorrect Sync installation. The Ford released upgrade for Sync 3.0 does not include the installation of Sync 2.2.17011 which was the first production version to include Apple CarPlay. It is assumed by Ford that the upgrades would be accomplished in a step basis which would naturally include the installation of upgrades thru the Sync 3.0 lifespan. In theory this is the ideal method, however, this is the real world. This issue can be corrected using the procedures in this tutorial.

This tutorial covers the installation of Sync 2.2.17011 and Sync 3.0.20204 or 23219 with the associated Sync Voice and Gracenote files maintaining the Apple CarPlay feature. This will be accomplished in two separate steps, regardless of the Sync version presently installed on the APIM.

Sync Apps Package Installation Instructions

NOTE: This installation consists of at least 2 reboots, in which the vehicle ignition must remain on throughout the process. DO NOT REMOVE THE USB UNTIL THE ENTIRE PROCESS HAS COMPLETED.

  1. Insert the USB in the vehicle, the “Updating Software” message will appear. Once the software has been installed, the system will display a Key Cycle or Reboot message. DO NOT interfere with the process, the APIM will reboot on its own and continue the installation. Be patient and wait.
  2. Once the second reboot has completed, the “Updating Software” message will appear again. This is running the Interrogator Utility, which should be quick. Once this is completed, the system will display an “Installation Complete” message. It is safe to remove the USB.

Master Reset Required

Once the Sync system seems stable and the maps are loaded, perform a ‘Master Reset’. This is not optional. Once the reset is finished and the system has rebooted, you can now re-pair your phones and make other adjustments.
