Upgrading 2016 Ford Escape from Sync 3.0 1.0

I am trying to upgrade my OS on my escape and have been running into issues so I decided to come here! I am currently on Sync 3 1.0. My ultimate goal is to get on an OS new enough that I can get a new usb hub and use CarPlay.

Steps I have taken:

  • Tried using the ford approach, but got the error message that there was not enough space, which seemed common for people trying to make a large OS jump.
-Research led me to try the cyanlabs manual approach, but got bad file errors when any of the downloads from the drop downs provided on the website.
-Found a thread that said that it may be helpful to update to an earlier version, then jump to a newer one. That thread is here: "Bad Installation File" Upgrading from 1.0 to 3.4 - #6 by warlock12118. The APPS file it suggested is here: HN1T-14G381-SA - SYNC 3 APIM Software (IVSU) Database - CyanLabs.
-When I tried this approach though, I didnt know if I needed to find matching files for voice and gracenotes to go with the app file…? Or if I should do a full reset, or just an ‘update’? I think this is called ‘building the USB’ and boy I am struggling with it!
-I am on Mac, so I cant use the software, which I think is a nagging obstacle as well.

I feel like I was close, and that doing a jump to an earlier version, then to a more recent one is the move, but I just got stuck on how to do that. Having the Gracenotes disappear in newer versions also confused me. Thanks for any help anyone could provide.

SYNC Region: NA

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 1.0

New SYNC Version: 1.0

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
Not enough space; then bad files or update failed

Update Method: CyanLabs Manual Method

You don’t need to worry about voices, Gracenotes, etc you won’t be staying on the 2.x build. The 2.x build clears away an overlay used by Sync 3 1.x and adds in the additional support for Car Play, once you get on a 2.x build you can use the full 3.0.23219 available from owner.ford.com for your VIN.

Hey thanks so much for the info!

So if I understand correctly, I should just download the 2.X build in the link I referenced, and then update the car using that one file. Should I use the method described on the ford website or should i use the manual reformat thing on CyanLabs? Ive been struggling trying to figure out exactly what should be on the USB.

You just use the Ford process, you don’t use the reformat.

The purpose of the updater is to get a vehicle to 3.4, the least risk method is to stay in the Ford supported build for your car.

Once you get the v2.x build installed you have the pre reqs for Car Play, then you can go to 3.0.23219. You’ll still need to replace the USB hub for Car Play, but this keeps you in the Ford supported path and you won’t have to deal with the 3.4.x compatibility issues the Escape has like the flickering screen when you go under an overpass during the day.

OK trying again:

So I am downloading the auto install and the update file from the link in my post, putting auto install in the root file, and then making a folder called ‘SyncMyRide’ in the root folder as well. In that folder I am putting the 2.X .tar file. So right now, my USB format is:

  • autoinstall.lst
  • SyncMyRide
    • HN1T-14G381-SA.tar

When I do the ford method it also gives me a “DONTINDX.MSA” file, do I need to include that too?

Thank you for your patience and all your help. Was tempted to message about this but figured having it on the forum might help someone else haha

Update: doing it this way just gave me the ‘bad file: installation stopped” error

The DONTINDEX.MSA basically tells Sync not to search the drive for things like media files, it will make things go a little faster.

For your error, look at the name of the file in the SyncMyRide directory by right clicking and selecting properties. It needs to match what is in the autoinstall.lst file.

If the error continues, in Windows, right click in the USB, select format, exFAT and uncheck the quick block so that any bad blocks on the USB are de-allocated.

Then copy the files to the USB again
