2018 Flex SEL Upgrade from 2.3.17109 to most current BLACK SCREEN

Went through all the steps as outlined in the documentation. Used a 32GB USB drive. When I put the USB in, after the car was started, it said it was updating, then the display went black. The screen does not respond. After waiting for more than 30min with no change, I had to shut the car off. I removed the USB drive.
When starting the car again, the screen remains black.

Did I brick my unit?
If not, how can I fix?

The first thing to try is another USB drive.
Is this the original Sync unit and screen in the vehicle?
Did you ever see the boot screen with the Mustang, or horse, or Ford logo?

Ill try another USB drive.
As far as I know, this is the original unit. I am the 2nd owner.
I never saw the boot screen.

2018 Flex SEL came with optional Navigation. Did yours have Nav before you started? Also you might try formatting the USB drive as exFat.

Disconnect the car battery for 15 minutes and reconnect and see if that wakes up the Sync unit. If it does, what version of Sync is installed at this point?

The app does that using diskpart in Windows. It’s at the beginning of the log.

Mine has nav. I used the windows program to make the USB stick. I tried the 15m battery disconnect before asking here.

Can you tell if the unit is getting power? Does the screen get slightly less dark, or is it totally black all the time?

It has power. You can see it’s in in the dark. It does emit a bit of light.

So the screen backlight does light up, but it’s dim since there is no video to the unit. That’s good.

Do you have FORScan? And a OBD2 adapter?

Do a setup scan and save the profile. Look to see if you can see the APIM module in the ASBUILT section. Save the asbuilt as it is now.
Look for the Theme setting and set it to Ford Classic if it is not already set.

I backed up the APIM ASBUILT.
The Theme: 7D0-03-01 [0000 0002 00DD]
If I’m reading this correctly, the bold 00 would indicate the theme. The spreadsheet says 00 is for Ford Classic, and I’m already set for that.

OK, I wanted to check if it was a simple theme issue first. It’s not…

So fine with FORScan, this is good. Let’s try to load the entire OEM APIM As Built for the module.

  1. Go to https://www.motorcraftservice.com/Home/SetCountry?returnUrl=%2FHome%2FIndex.
    Inpuit the country, US and enter.
  2. Now go to Index - FordServiceInfo.Com (motorcraftservice.com).
  3. Enter your VIN, capcha, then proceed to the asbuilt for your vehicle.
  4. Download the file, SAVE the file to the FORScan asbuilt folder. Should be under My Documents. This is a .ab file that FORScan can open. You can also see the asbuilt info on the page.
  5. Connect to the vehicle, open FORScan and go to the APIM As Built page like you did before.
  6. Load the OEM asbuilt for the APIM. This will be the 'Restore" button.
  7. Write the changes. If it says there are no changes or the checksums are different, just say to write the changes anyways.
  8. Reboot the APIM.

It works or not…but this will rule out asbuilt corruption as an issue.

I was able to send the OEM APIM AsBuilt without issue, unfortunately that did not work to revive it. To reboot the unit I turned the car off, waited for the screen to turn off. Restarted the car. Still black. Held the “Seek Up” and stero power button for 10 sec until the screen turned off. Still no change.

No need to reply back today. Its a holiday and you have already gone above and beyond.

This is really acting as if the screen was replaced recently and a MY20 screen was installed. But the APIM is original as far as you know.

Try running the APIM Interrogator Utility to see if you can get a log out of the APIM about it’s status. It might not run at all, but nothing to lose. You will not be able to see the update running but it usually takes about 2 minutes if that. So if you make the Interrogator Utility usb and insert it in the vehicle, just wait about 3-5 minutes and then remove it. If it didn’t finish by then it probably will not run. The Interrogator Utility can be found in the Syn3 Updater Troubleshooting tab.

I did notice that the log states a Windows 11 machine was used, but I think this wouldn’t make any difference. Just wanted to point that out.

I’ve been following this since I have had 3 Flex. I agree with F150chief though it does act exactly like the my20 screen issue.

At this point though, as your probably getting desperate, I would try maybe using a lower version of the Sync software and see if that works. The previous version 2.3 was a really early one it seems so I would try the 3.3 version. I am guessing you have a really early APIM that could be one of the more temperamental ones. Also I think you have the early USB ports so that “could” also be an issue. Lots of work here for sure to find what this one might be.

I made the Interrogater Utility. After letting it sit for almost 15min, i removed the USB. There doesnt seem to be an XML log file on the USB.

I will try this and let you know if anything happens.
